2020.09.22 01:17 thediceofRNGesus Disciples of the demon king [2274 words]

The demon King sighed as he continued to effortlessly Dodge the hail of bullets and magical fire Giel and Ellie Sent his way.
“You aren't going to be able to hit me like this. I’ve clearly shown that I am much faster than both your bullets and your spells. Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity, are you insane?” He asked holding up one claw.
“I'd be insane if I listened to you,” Ellie said still casting, “for all we know this method is your one weakness, and that's why you're trying so hard to get us to stop doing it”
“Yeah,” Kenn chimed in, “why would you train us anyway? Our goal is to kill you after all.”
The demon king stopped dodging, the spells and bullets both pinging off his body as if it were a steel wall. He winced internally as some of his clothing was burned by the heat of the magic but soldiered on, nonetheless.
“Do you want to know my equivalent power in the human ‘core system’?”
“What?” Hailey asked.
“Do you want to know what level my power would be at if I cultivated magic like humans do?” He didn't give them any time to think about the question and simply answered, “I would be a black core.”
Ellie gasps seeming to choke in the middle of her spell cast, Hailey stumbled backward as if struck and Giel looked nauseous. The non-magic users were just confused and worried by their party mates’ reactions.
“What's a black core?” Sandra frowned “what level of cultivation is it?”
“A-a black core isn't something you can get from cultivation… It's impossible, it's literally impossible. only the gods have black cores, cores so condensed down that not even a single mode of energy can escape, I-it's impossible…”
All the disciples grew pale at that, but it was Kenn who worked up the courage to speak.
“I don't believe you. There's no way that anyone's that powerful.”
At that, the demon King's ever-present smirk transformed into a malicious grin. As power seemed to flood out of him, nearly forcing all of his students to their knees. Birds in nearby trees took to the air and the sound of animals fleeing through the forest was loud enough for all to hear, somewhere in the distance there were screams. All of the young heroes shuddered, no longer looking into the eyes of the strange man who had picked them up from the adventure’s guild, but the gaze of a monster.
“It doesn't matter if you believe me or not, I'm a being on the level of gods. I can raze cities with a thought, destroy armies with a gesture, and end civilizations with a blink. I have done all of that, and I will destroy this world and everything on it. The entire world had 100 years to stop me, and they have failed at every turn. Now there were only two years left, and you are all that is standing in between all life and its end. So, if you want to kill me…” suddenly his demeanor switched back to his normal self, the release nearly causing his student to collapse, “you're going to have to learn from me. Look at it this way the only possible way to kill someone as powerful as I am is to get said person to help you.”
“And what are we supposed to do?! you saw how our attacks just bounced off of you! You're probably immortal or something! How are we, a bunch of teenagers, supposed to stop you?! Are you just messing with us!? Is this some sort of sick game?!” Giel Shouted
The rest solemnly nodded in agreement.
The demon King sighed once again “Kenn, Hand me that sword, the one the knight captain gave you when he ‘recruited‘ you guys for this mission.”
the young fighter did as he was told shuffling through his bag of holding to remove a heavily enchanted blade, the demon king took it, rolling up his shirt sleeve as he began to talk, “I won't pretend it will be easy, and I won't pretend I'm as vulnerable as a normal person either, But I can assure you that I am most definitely mortal and killing me is possible.” with that he brought the sword down on his own arm severing it at the elbow, Dark blood, colored somewhere between red and purple, Spurted from the injury like a broken faucet as the severed limb Lay on the ground for a long moment before simply burst into purple flames and burned away to nothing.
All the disciples gawked, Dumbstruck at this act of insane self-harm.
“Oh, calm down you big babies, it'll grow back in a few minutes. Stings a bit though.” The demon king said with a wince “But this all goes to show the fact that I can be injured and thus can be killed, thank you for coming to my Ted talk.”
Everyone stood in silence for a while before the demon king obviously uncomfortable clapped loudly “now let's get you started on your curriculum”
“um first uh, Mr.Demon king,” Hailey asked meekly
“Yes, Hailey?”
“Do you have a …name, demon king is kind of a mouthful”
“hmmm… Yeah, I guess it. That’s an issue as I don’t really go by anything else.” He paused “What would you call me?”
Giel perked up “Koro-sens-!”
“No! we’re already close enough in concept do you want us to get sued!?”
The artificer frowned “okay, what do you suggest”
The Demon King looked thoughtful, rubbing his chin with his now regenerated arm, “You know I’ve always like Latin”
“What’s demon king in Latin” Sandra wondered.
“No, I meant I like Latin as a n- you know what whatever. It’s daemonium rex or daemonium regem, depending” the demon answer
“Okay, then its Regem!” Hailey declared.
“I like the sound of that,” Kenn added
“Yeah” grinned Giel “I can hear it now, 'heroes' slain by the demon king, Regem. Not a bad way to appear on the headlines.”
“I think it’s cool, all regal sounding,” Sandra said with a nod
Ellie frowned “I don't care what we call him, he needs to die. Aren't you guys already getting a bit too chummy.” The others looked down somewhat ashamed.
The demon king clapped breaking the silence “Then it's settled! From now on call me Regem, Regem…hmn, Invicta.”
“What does Invicta mean?”
The Demon King, Regem Invicta’s voice took on a dark tone, “It means iNvInCiBLe.”
“but d-didn’t you just tell us you’re not invincible…”
“Yes, I did. And for your sake, I hope I was right.” He cackled. “now… back to the matter of our curriculum.”
The disciples shared a nervous glance.
“We’ll start with the basics of mana cultivation.” Regem looked at Giel, Ellie, and Hailey “I’m sure you mages obviously know a bit, but I doubt you doing it right.”
Ellie gave the demon king a venomous look “We were trained at the national magic academy, I think we know what we’re doing when it comes to how magic works “she snorted
“or, and this is just a thought, you have no idea. Face it kid, your spells didn’t even tickle” Regem stated with a shrug, Receiving a hate-filled look from the mage.
“What about us?” Kenn asked, “Me and Sandra don’t use magic.”
The demon king chuckled “You really think that, don’t you?” He smirked “Where do you think Higher ranking knights get their strength from? That’s right! Mana. Like most forms of energy, it has many uses. Not just necessarily casting spells. For example, a roguish type like Sandy, with the right mana types, could take advantage of this by turning invisible or fashioning camouflage.”
Sandra’s eyes practically sparkled at the idea.
Giel’s did too but for a different reason “So… it’s like the force!”
“I guess it is, young padawan” Regem nodded with a smile
“How idiotic.” Ellie groaned
Sandra smirked “Ellie, I find your lack of faith… disturbing”
The mage just rolled her eyes “I’m sorry if I’m not into making references with the guy who plans or destroying the entire planet. remember that? Killing us and everyone else in the process or am I the only one who actually wants to kill this guy?”
Regem cleared his throat “Eherm… yeah sorry, back to your training. Before we can do anything, I need to know your gates.”
“Gates?” Kenn asked raising an eyebrow.
“Your affinities, your elements, the type of magic you can use most easily. You magic-user types should already have an idea,” he said turning to Ellie and the other two mages “Go!”
“Force and metal” Giel answered.
“Good, I can see why you went into spellarms, a good combination.”
“That and the fact that guns are AWESOME!!!” Giel hollered firing his pistol into the air.
“And you Ellie?”
Ellie glared but eventually grunted out an answer “Fire, Ice, Lightning” Sending a fireball the demon king’s way, which was easily dodged.
“I can see why you're a battlemage, I may know some spells that will help you out,” he said with a smile, only getting a dark look in reply.
“And obviously a healer has a Holy gate but what are your othe-“
“None” Hailey interrupted “I don’t have any others…” She added in a whisper.
“Oh… Okay, that’s… We can work with that.”
The healer looked down at her feet “Sorry...”
“Really, it's okay. There are worse Gates And every party needs a healer” Regem said with a reassuring smile “Now for you two,” he turned to Kenn and Sandra “we need to figure out exactly which gates you can open”
The two shared a glance “And how do we do that?”
“The most boring way possible of course, meditation!”
So The warrior and thief found themselves sitting silently on the ground, eyes closed trying to visualize the interior of their very souls, or as Regem called it their conduit planes
“conduit planes are your connection to the manasphere, This is where your gates manifest to turn the neutral mana you absorb into mana that matches your affinity.” He poked Kenn in the chest “I need you to see what those affinities are and tell me, in return, I'll give you the in on one of my special powers.”
Kenn and Sandra both nodded as they tried to turn their vision inward.
Sandra tried to imagine her soul, she would usually think of that as something like a ball of light or a ghostly copy of herself or one of those little squiggly things from that show where people turn into weapons. but according to the demon King that was not what she was supposed to be imagining at the moment. She was supposed to be imagining a place, somewhere with a lot of doors.
She couldn't help but think of home at that. It had been a long time since she had seen earth but if she could remember anything, she could remember a childhood memory of standing at the end of a hallway lined with doors each going to a different classroom, One of them would be filled with the people that she would be interacting with for the entire year, The rest would probably be strangers. Suddenly she felt the world seem to shift away, her senses flowed inward swirling deeper like a whirlpool, then she was there. The hallway was just like she remembered, the posters proclaiming school values, the chairs placed outside the rooms for bad kids, the tile floors dotted with flecks of color, but it was endless, the colors muted. A gray-tinted passage going on forever. As she walked down its length, she didn't know how far she had walked, Sandra wondered what she was looking for, but she somehow felt she would know it when she saw it. She walked past door after door, all of them colorless and dull, she got the feeling there was something behind all of them but none of it was interesting to her, in fact, she got the feeling that if she opened any of those something terrible would happen, so she didn’t. She walked on for hours maybe minutes, it was hard to tell, until she found something different, there were two doors that weren’t the dullish color of the rest of this place. One was a noxious green, it glowed with a sickly light and a mist colored a mix of vomit brown and pus yellow rolled out from the gap between the door and the floor. The other was a much darker gray than the others in the hall, nearly black but not quite, it seemed to pulse an even darker shade with the rhythm of her heart. Both doors felt like they were reaching out towards her and at first, she thought she was being given a choice. As she searched her feelings, she realized that that was not the case, both doors were a part of her and she could enter either if she wished. Doing so would result in something good she could feel it.
Sandra stopped her self from entering though, she couldn't be sure what was on the other side, she had been told to do this by the demon King after all maybe it was a trap and even if it wasn't she hadn't been told to go into the room what the doors were, she looked closer at each door, just knowing what each of them represented. With that, only by making the decision to, Sandra woke up.

2020.09.21 20:31 ConorCulture Rebookiverary Pt. 3 - Slammiversary 2007

Rhino and Senshi defeats The Latin American Xchange in a Tag Team Match
Jay Lethal defeats Alex Shelley © to win the X Division Championship
Alex Shelley has held the X Division Championship after defeating Chris Sabin at Final Resolution, and dominating the X Division Championship with Kevin Nash. Jay Lethal, a rising fan favourite, earns himself a match against Shelley at Slammiversary. He ends up winning with a Macho Elbow. Afterwards, Kevin Nash finally turns on Shelley, hitting him with a Big Boot and Chokeslam through a table.
Frank Wycheck and Jerry Lynn defeats James Storm and Ron Killings in a Tag Team Match
Chris Harris (with Gail Kim) defeats Kip James (with BJ James)
After a Six Sides of Steel Match at Lockdown and Texas Deathmatch at Sacrifice, Chris Harris and James Storm go their separate ways in TNA. Harris begins a feud with The Voodoo Kin Mafia, after he defeats BJ James on Impact. Kip attacks him afterwards and a beat down ensues. They dress up as America’s Most Wanted next week, with Kip as Harris acting like a doofus and BJ as Storm, pretending to be drunk. Harris jumps them during their mockery, and is then joined by Gail Kim as they stand tall. Harris wins clean at the show, with him and Gail Kim beating up the VKM afterwards.
Team 3D © defeats Christian’s Coalition (Robert Roode and Tomko) and The Steiner Brothers to retain the TNA Tag Team Championships
Team 3D defeat The Motor City Machine Guns in the tournament finals of the inaugural TNA World Tag Team Championships tournament. Christian’s Coalition get themselves a match for the titles, with Tomko and Robert Roode set to fight. Scott Steiner wants a piece of the pie too, and brings along his brother Rick for the fight. This makes it a Three-way Tag, meaning it is also No DQ. Team 3D warn the two opposing teams that there will be tables, so get ready. However, Tomko and Roode are both under the tutelage of Christian, who innovated the Conchairto. Then the Steiners are just, big boys.
Tomko and Steiner face off on the go home show of Impact!, with Tomko in contention to potentially move up into the main event picture. This win would aid that push. They go for a few minutes buts its plagued by interference from all the parties involved in this trifecta feud. Team 3D hit the 3-D and Whats Up to both guys, but then they start fighting with Christian’s Coalition. Rick Steiner then comes out and clears the ring. This is the last visual heading into this match. Scott does the heavylifting for Rick although they do at one point hit the Steinerizer, only for it to be broken up. Brother Devon is taken out to cancel a 3D, leaving Ray to be hit by a Northern Lariat from Roode. He goes to double team with Tomko, but it is kicked out of. They seem to blow apart, but before anything can happen Team 3D hit the 3D on Roode. Tomko watches them pin him to retain their titles.
Samoa Joe defeats Sting
During a Jim Cornette promo announcing the King of the Mountain Match which we will delve into later on, Samoa Joe interrupts and demands he be put in it. Jimmy says he won’t be put in straight away as qualifying match slots are full, but he still has plans for The Submission Machine. He wanted to guarantee him a big match at one of TNA’s biggest events, rather than maybe lose a qualifier and have nothing. He wants the hottest rising star in pro wrestling to take on a legend of the sport, an icon so to speak. He wants to have Samoa Joe vs. Sting at Slammiversary. Joe agrees to the match but tells Cornette that he won’t be denied a Championship match again. He will take Cornette out if that’s what it takes to get his Championship match. Cornette says his match will come, but for now he has to prove himself against Sting; two years on from his debut. Joe defeats Sting clean by making him pass out in the Coquina Clutch. After the match he gets on the microphone and tells whoever is coming out of tonight’s main event with the Championship that he is coming for him.
Kurt Angle defeats Abyss, AJ Styles, Christian Cage © and Christopher Daniels in a King of the Mountain match to win the TNA World Heavyweight Championship
Jim Cornette announces that it is well established how much he loves tradition and that means at the third edition of Slammiversary, Kurt Angle will defend his Championship in a Five-Man King of the Mountain Match. The challengers will be decided in four King of the Mountain Qualifying Matches. He is then interrupted by Joe and you saw what happened. These five men then all win qualifiers, with AJ getting help from Tomko to ensure the coalition can keep Christian’s TNA World Championship in his grasp.
AJ and Christian work together throughout the match due to the coalition connection. AJ becomes legal after pinning Daniels, whilst Christian is in the penalty box following Abyss pinning him. AJ tries to win the championship but is stopped by Angle. When Christian comes out of the penalty box, he is furious with AJ and wants to know why AJ tried to win “his Championship”. He tells AJ to lie down so he can become legal. AJ does but then small packages Christian for the three! AJ turns face doing this, sending Cage back to the penalty box. Christian is furious but can do nothing about it. AJ is halfway up the ladder when Angle pulls him down and Olympic Slams him. Angle grabs the belt off the floor where AJ dropped it, climbs the ladder and hangs it to win the match and win the title, becoming the second ever champion. He is the king of the mountain, and Christian Cage has to watch Angle hold the title high.

2020.09.21 11:32 Metalliceyes35 This was supposed to be the beginning of a book. Forgive the grammatical errors, I know it’s formatted like crap but this is the only way I could copy the document, let me know if you think it’s worth finishing.

What is the meaning of life? This age old question, perhaps the most controversial and sought after. The various religions and philosophies throughout recorded human history have given a wide variety of answers. For many of us, our daily life and all of our decisions are determined by these individual answers to this question. Our ability to ask this question is the definition of humanity, its what separates us from the rest of the animal kingdom. From our studies over hundreds of years to the development of modern science. We now understand the origins of these abilities and how the body drives them. The anatomy of the brain to our endocrine system and all other various designs of this organic, robotic machine we call the human body. Psychology is a relatively new study, that is ever changing. Human thoughts and instincts that bloom into a kaleidoscope of behaviors more vast than grains of sand. So many ideas, philosophies, religions and studies in our very short lifetime is barely enough to scratch the surface. What if I told you there was a short way to understand and master them all? Because placing all of your energy into any one of these subjects is merely the tail wagging the dog. I have found the root cause of all of it, and synthesized them all into one complex. It is our biggest strength, the very thing that has catapulted humanity into success. But yet, it is our biggest flaw and is the greatest fallacy of mankind. I fear it may just be our undoing, and so is why i’ve chosen to write my amazing discovery down. I have also chosen to use latin words, because this language is the root of so many different languages and is so widely used in the scientific community to classify things of significance. I wish to begin an awakening, to pour words in such a way to provoke your thoughts that they will work as a key to the lock of your consciousness. Each tumbler of a lock much be matched to the corresponding tooth on the key in unison, not too little or too much to release the mechanism. Such is my study to convey unto you. I think of each human mind as a rubix cube, some are more whole than others. We twist away our entire life to match all of the colors, some near completion while others digress more and more convoluted. I’ve discovered information that if conjugated in the correct way can solve this puzzle and create a more perfect animal. This practice is what I call Unianime In English it simply translates to accord, harmonious or of one mind. I think of it as a practice, somewhere between a philosophy and a meditation. It will be the sum of all my writings. There is the opposite as well, the things that break this harmony, and is the single most greatest enemy of the human mind. Its at the heart of all of our problems and suffering. Our worst attributes, the sum of all of our shame and fears. It drives us to madness, to commit the most horrible crimes and the most senseless, contradictory behaviors. This enemy of man, is a disease which is inherent in every human being. This sickness is what I call the Morbus It is only the latin word for disease, and is the best way to sum it up. Although it traverses so many different subjects and areas. Its an umbrella term, but functions as a root word to the various problems discussed. I would explain it as a similar disease to AIDS. Being just as destructive and has an earlier form that must incubate to fruition. HIV is the precursor to the AIDS disease, it lies dormant and slowly changes into the above said affliction. You see first it is contracted and slowly gets worse and worse until its peak, resulting in a horrible painful death. This period of HIV is what I compare to my next key term. The precursor is what I call Obscurum
Of course its in relation to obscurity, meaning a vague or difficulty in understanding. It is the path that leads to the Morbus. Not as advanced, but just as detrimental to our nature as human beings. The idea is to achieve Unianime, by lifting all types of Obscurum, containing and curing the Morbus if and when possible. This is much easier said than done, when I explain what parts of your life are defined by these strange new words it could mean unlearning everything as you know it, and shake you to your very core. I write these words to invite any and all who are committed to change. If you have suffered enough, and are tired of witnessing destruction, this can be your opportunity to make a difference in yourself. If one can conquer themselves is enough, but changing the world is ideal. Mankind is the most deceptive animal, we think of our existence in the most high regard. We refer to people as “Human beings”. We have all heard the phrase “that’s a Human being!”, as if this is so exceptional it holds infinite amount of value. If an animal bites a man for any reason, it is killed immediately. If a man kills a man, he is given all the luxuries of life, safety and comfort in an effort to preserve him in the most healthy state. Only to be separated for a period of time, whereas animals are largely autonomous and do not even conscientiously make the decision to attack, but man boasts of a conscience to fully understand his actions. Yet, no matter how evil, our species in so conceited we hardly have the stomach to punish one of our own. We think of ourselves as so superior wether its to our fellow animals, or our collective group in which we identify ourselves. This same creature ironically is the most flawed in accordance with observations in comparisons to other life on the planet. How many flocks of geese go on foolish endeavors? That hold no relevance to their purpose. How many other animals readily kill themselves and others over such nonsense, all over simple ideas. From my objective observations, we are the most flawed, sick unnatural animal by far. Most of us confused, lost depressed, angry etc and having no idea why. Without our interference, we could sit back and watch animals and plants live in their perfect existence. Fulfilling their singular purpose everyday, with every movement and breath. Not over complicated, but living in perfect harmony. The only problem that has ever been is what we have dubbed ourselves, Mankind. How much more contrary is the truth in comparison to our vision of what we think we are? This includes me, and you. The first step to solving a problem is admitting you have one. Mankind has a superiority complex, inherent in every human being. Its very hard to swallow that you in fact are not the pinnacle of existence as we’ve been taught. This is a very powerful concept, to humble yourself to realize your whole life is a lie. Its an artificial fraud, brought about by unnatural corruption of a common living creature. How so? Imagine a human without two things. His tools of any kind, and collective knowledge passed down. Without this we are the most weakest, slow inept animal on the planet. Furthermore imagine if the aforementioned items were actually at the heart of his disease. A blessing and a curse, that has created a pretender to the throne of the animal kingdom. We are not a very good ruler at all, when we are not inflicting unspeakable horrors on ourselves we are destroying an ecosystem or running a creature extinct. All the while looking at the sky and trying desperately to figure it all out, in- between our time of worshipping ourselves. Having the audacity to think we’ve mapped the universe and slapped an age on it. Celebrities often come from humble beginnings, upon much fame and fortune are often dead by a young age, after a fast and wild lifestyle. This is very much the direct our species are headed. If nature could weep for mankind, our oceans would be filled with its tears.
I do not consider myself a religious person, although I give much credence to spirituality given its been so fundamental to our species since the beginning. It has very much evolved with us, and gives insight into the complexity of the human mind. Even the anthesis of all spirituality Atheism, has become a religion in its own right. It thinks its answer is supreme, and is at the forefront of truth. People go out and prosthelytize at seminars and with books just like any other. Mired in there beliefs of superiority and pitying the inferior desperately trying to help them see the light. You can change the book, but you cant change the human, the picture might change but the frame stays the same. I believe that when these behaviors are not understood, this leads to an example of Obscurum. Think of all the disfunction this has caused, and soon after leads to the Morbus. An example being a suicide cult, or a suicide bomber. A fanatical following of self destruction, or attacks on people around them. Some mutilate themselves, refuse medical care or even give away all their money to a leader or an organization. They believe they are doing the will or bidding of an otherworldly god or leader, but in all actuality they are like a wet electronic device that starts to haywire and short out, causing malfunction. Obscurum is when your thoughts are misplaced and unnatural, Morbus is when this drives you to action that is useless, destructive or counterproductive. How do we know what is right and wrong? Its simple, just use the method that is used for everything else. Observation, logic and comparisons. This is how science was founded, and is the basis for everything we have come to discover about us and the world. If you wish to know the meaning of life, ask yourself “what does life want?” And how does it achieve this? Well, take a look at the rest of the animal kingdom. Life’s priority is to live and to replicate. Everything is an extension of these two things. Observe animals in the wild, from microscopic, to the largest that swim in the oceans. All actions they take lead right back to these two things. With every breath and every movement it is perfect. Its is either an effort to live or to replicate. Its not very complicated if you think about it, its only our wayward species that convolutes these two items, as we do everything else in our lives. Our very existence and species are a fiasco of the original purpose. We are not the way nature intended us to be, sure we live and replicate very well, but there is a difference between quality and quantity. There is much to be said of any animal that populates way too quickly. It unbalances the ecosystem and can lead to very low quality of life for the species. This usually only happens when outside interference occurs, wether from another species like man, or a natural disaster. When left purely to its own devices, nature is nearly perfect. How many animals in the wild suffer from any of the long list of mental illness noted in the DSM? How much crime exist in the animal kingdom, sure the hyena will steal from the lion but this is apart of its genetic adaptations and means to live. Most Human crime is trivial at best, we have all the means to live just fine and will still go kill, and rob you name it for what? When the ends doesn’t justify the means and is usually far more risky to our survival. Human beings are full of conundrums. This could be a book all on its own, our species is a victim of itself and every individual is a victim of their own mind. What other animal can boast of this? None. We often mistake this as we aren’t an animal at all, maybe we are something different. Or we are just so great thats why. No, its quite the opposite we are indeed an animal, and the least great of them all. If nature could give us a grade, it would have to redefine failure. I will start by giving examples of my concepts at work in our world. Lets start big, with the Peoples Temple started by cult leader Jim Jones. Being human we are born with certain
propensities, on being inclined to religious and spiritual beliefs. Some of them are merely common parts of our lives. Church on Sunday, prayers before bed, and certain dogma. These behaviors are lower levels of Obscurum, far from Morbus but always having the potential to form into the latter. The humble beginnings of The Peoples Temple shows us this, they started out as a regular worship service, nothing far out of the ordinary. Over the course of 30 years their dormant form of Obscurum slowly started to activate, the congregations behaviors slowly started becoming more and more self defeating. By the time it was advanced Morbus 909 homo sapiens voluntarily drank poison and died right there all together. Including the leader Jim Jones, with a self inflicted gun shot wound. All for what? What would be so powerful to provoke so many to kill themselves and their own offspring? The answer is that it lies in each and everyone of us. It is just apart of being a human being. When these people started this cult, they did so guided by Obscurum, and it slowly turned into Morbus. Resulting in accomplishing what every other animal on the planet runs in fear from, the death of their offspring and themselves. The one job that we all know without question we are here for. To live and to successfully breed. I say nature would have to redefine failure to describe the human race because what other animal does this? This is only one scenario of countless throughout history, we kill ourselves individually everyday. Often eliminating ones own offspring in the process, given the frequency of these backwards behaviors, it greatly offsets any of our so called boastful accomplishments. Sure we have populated the world in the billions, but I see this as a perfect example of rampant Quantity over quality. The natural order of things demand the opposite quality over quantity. The previous examples speak for themselves, we have probably destroyed ourselves for more than we have ever propagated. Much of what we have been preoccupied with does us no justice whatsoever. I drive to work everyday traveling in a machine, buy all of my food effortlessly from a store, and entertain myself by typing on a computer. But what does this accomplish for me as an animal? Or for us as a species? Nothing! It is actually to the contrary detrimental. We grow more and more physically weak from our machines doing all the work for us. The only evolution happening is with our technology. While we digress our world becoming ever so much easier, but for some reason we become more and more useless and miserable. This speaks for itself, the further we are separated from what we truly are the worse we become. Nature is a system of checks and balances. This is evident in everything going on in the world today, and predicts the direction in which we are headed. I can see the last of the human race clinging to its last breath clear as glass, selected out by its own technology, buried under heaps of mechanization. Thats if we all don’t become so distraught we end up killing each other, or ourselves first. The entire species consumed by the Morbus will not live long.

2020.09.21 00:52 500scnds [Table] I made a free alternative to Photoshop, that is used by 7 million people. Ask me Anything!

Source Guestbook
Questions Answers
I understand that people are always hesitant to answer this very specifically, but I'm always curious - given 7 million visitors, what your ballpark profit? And what's the ratio of the profit-to-expenses, which I assume is mostly server hosting costs as a one man operation? Most of my profit comes from ads. I make around 5 cents for every hour someone spends in Photopea (on average). In 2019, people spent 5 million hours working in Photopea, so I made around $250,000. I hope it could be 2x to 4x more this year :)
Photopea runs completely in your computer (after Photopea.com loads, you can disconnect from the internet and use it offline). I use only a file hosting, for which I pay around 50 USD a year.
the below is a reply to the above
How is that possible to only pay 50 USD/year when you get ~7 million people in a month and your site is 1.8mb. That's around 12tb/month. I don't know of any host willing to do 12tb of data for $50/12 I don't understand it either :/ I will ask my hosting provider.
the below is a reply to the above
Don’t! :) I already did :)
the below is another reply to the original answer
I'm glad you have a subscription option. As a policy I don't turn my adblocker off, but I'll totally subscribe as your rates are quite reasonable! If you're around and don't mind answering, how many subscriptions do you have? There are hundreds of people paying for Premium :) so about 0.01% of all users :)
the below is another reply to the original answer
How much do you think you're losing out because of adblockers? It is hard to tell, maybe between 10 to 40 percent :/
the below is a reply to the above
You should implement a donation feature as well, to offer more ways for users to support you. People can already order a Premium. I think it is better to get something in return (removing ads), so anybody who wants to support us can do it :)
First of all, thank you for making a great alternative. My question is, how would you compare Photopea to The Gimp in terms of features and interface? The interface of Photopea is closer to Photoshop than GIMP (so it is more comfortable to Photoshop users). I think all you can do in GIMP you can do in Photopea, but with a different workflow. You can open GIMP files (XCF) in Photopea.
There are many advanced features in Photopea, that are not in GIMP. The most important is probably the full support of a PSD format.
the below is a reply to the above
Have to confess I'd never heard about this software until reading your post, but your mention of the PSD feature makes me want to check it out immediately. I admire your determination, dedication, and skills. Thank you :)
the below is a reply to the above
Does it support vectors better than Photoshop? I don't like how limited it is in Photoshop. Even illustrator is annoying Photopea can open SVG and PDF images better than Photoshop. Just try it!
the below is a reply to the grandparent
Thank you for your program. I use it to make memes and do photoshopped things! You are welcome! I am happy that Photopea is useful to you :)
How did you learn how to make software? I was interested in computers since I was 14. I was studying computer science at the university between 18 and 25 years of age.
I studied theoretical computer science at the Charles university in Prague. Finishing the university was probably the hardest thing in my life (I do not enjoy learning as much as I enjoy creating stuff). But I also think it was the most valuable and productive part of my life and I am very proud of it :)
Here to say I've been using it, maybe the only white listed site on my ad-block. What was the hardest part to implement? The advanced foreground selection was quite hard. It is used e.g. in MagicCut. I wanted to reach the quality of remove.bg (where you pay $2 per image), but it still does not work that well.
Anyway, I think MagicCut works better than all other free tools and many commercial tools, so it can save you a lot of money :)

You should look at U-2 Net https://github.com/NathanUA/U-2-Net a recently released paper with code that has amazing results I know quite a lot about this research :) The problem is, that people use Photopea for free, so it would have to run on their computers. They would have to download a 200 MB network, and unless they don't have a $2000 GPU, they would have to wait for hours to do such foreground / background detection.
the below is a reply to the above
From the paper: "To facilitate the usage of our design in computation and memory constrained environments, we provide a small version of our U2-Net, called U2-Net† (4.7 MB). The U2-Net† achieves competitive results against most of the SOTA models (see Fig. 1) at 40 FPS." Unless there's something similar but better or they're outright lying, 4.7 MB sounds like an extremely reasonable memory footprint and it's pretrained so nobody's going to max out their GPU. You might want to give it another look. Wow, that sounds great, I will put it into my issues: https://github.com/photopea/photopea/issues/2368
the below is a reply to the grandparent
Not 100% sure, but a GPU is needed to train the network (which can take hours) and the trained networks usually do things in seconds or even faster. Users would still need to download the network, but it wouldn't be very computationally expensive. Such trained network can process the input in seconds on the GPU. If you process the input of the network on a CPU (even with multiple cores), it can take minutes or even hours. And training on a CPU can take weeks :)
I use Photopea regularly when developing web sites. I don't have to fire up my VM or limit myself to GIMP or Krita. The third most popular tech magazine in the Czech Republic, Letem světem Applem, was developed with the help of your tool. Díky! My question: will you ever open-source Photopea, at least partially? Hi, thanks a lot!
A huge part of Photopea is open-sourced and available at https://github.com/photopea?tab=repositories
the below is a reply to the above
I'm scared to even open that repo 😂. What hosting provider are you using that can handle 5 million users in a year? I have a local hosting provider from the Czech Republic. It is just distributing HTML, CSS and JS files (no server-side computations like PHP or SQL databases), so it is not that hard.
Hi! Two questions 1. Does photopea have support for RAW photo files of varying cameras? (.ARW for example) 2. Why do you think Adobe charges so much for their platform when your model is clearly fairly simple to produce (if one person can do it alone) and functions profitably? Hi! Yes, Photopea can open .DNG, .CR2, .NEF and .ARW files :)
There are programs that are much more expensive than Adobe products :) It is hard to tell, but I think it is because there are no reasonable alternatives, or the alternatives are not known very well.
the below is a reply to the above
As a Fuji user, .RAF support coming at some point? Hi, the .RAF format was invented by Fuji and has never been publicly described anywhere. I tried to ask Fuji to provide a description of their format, so that I can implement it into Photopea, but nobody replied :(
I think Fuji does not want you to open their files in any other software than their software.
the below is a reply to the above
I don't think fuji has their own editing software, most people use either Capture One or Lightroom, or Irident X-Transformer to convert into a DNG Photopea can open DNG without any problems :) but it is a real pity they don't store it in DNG directly.
I just discovered this software and it is bloody amazing. As a hobby animator, I'm wondering - Do you have any plans, or have you at least thought about, making an animation software in the same way you have achieved this? Something like Adobe Flash/Animate or Toon Boom Harmony. (I'm already sold on your idea for a video editor, since Davinci Resolve's free version has NEVER been able to render videos for me without crashing) There is a distinct lack of reasonably priced animation software that achieves nearly as much as these two ridiculously expensive subscription programs, without sacrificing something really important to animation. The closest thing to achieving what Animate or Harmony has is Blender's new 2d animate mode, and even then, you have to sacrifice convenient features like easy tweening. An alternative free (or one-purchase) animation software would make me - and so many other people happy. Now that I know this software exists, I'll be sure to donate to its production. Thanks! You are not the first one asking for this :) I wish I could make so many tools, but I am afraid my life is too short for all that work :D
If I manage to make a good team of programmers in the future, I would love to make such animation software.
Is there a comprehensive guide I can find for all the tools in photopea? I’m new to photo editing and still confused by the interface. Photopea is an advanced editor and it is hard to learn simply by using it. I wrote a manual here: www.Photopea.com/learn .
the below is a reply to the above
You made documentation? What kind of unholy programmer from the abyss are you? Don’t let our bosses find out or we’re screwed. I made it after several years of explaining people how to do things in emails, etc :) Now, I can simply send them links to my documentation. It took me less than a week :D
I love using photopea! I open it almost daily. Is there a way to review the source and contribute pull requests? Have you thought about providing an offline or self-hosted release? Thanks! The open-source parts of Photopea are published on our GitHub: https://github.com/photopea?tab=repositories . We provide a self-hosted versions for money, as it needs to be updated regularly.
How would you compare it to photoshop? Photopea has about 90% of features of Adobe Photoshop, but there are some features of Photopea that Photoshop doesn't have (e.g converting PDF, SVG, Sketch, XD, Figma to layered PSD documents).
Also, only Photoshop and Photopea fully support the PSD format, so I think Photopea is the best alternative to Photoshop at the moment.
the below is a reply to the above
What do you think about GIMP? GIMP is great, but it can not work with PSD files properly. Also, the interface is quite different from Adobe Photoshop, and it is hard to use for former Photoshop users.
https://www.facebook.com/photopea/photos/a.1703140446613703/2373211539606587/
Do you pronounce it photo-pea, or photo-pee-ah? I pronounce it Photo-pea, but most of people pronounce it photo-pee-ah.
It is probably the most asked question in our subreddit :) /photopea.
EDIT: I did a quick search and here is what I found :)
the below is a reply to the above
Good to know I got its pronunciation right :D I like photos and I like peas. What made you call it photopea? I wanted it to be PhotoSomething, and I wanted a domain PhotoSomething.com . Most of domains were occupied, until I found Pea :)
Not a question, but I just want to put this out there for all the non-developers, but the fact that Photopea was created by a single programmer is absolutely astounding. As a developer myself, I cannot fathom the productivity of this developer nor have I ever met someone that could be this productive. Teams of 10-20 developers could not match the functionality and feature list of photopea. And actually, here is a question after all, have you ever recorded or livestreamed yourself coding? I'm having a hard time imagining the pace required to be this productive. Do you have an estimate of the number of hours you have put into this? Hi, thanks a lot! I think I put between 15 000 and 20 000 hours into Photopea :) I never recorded myself programming, but most of it is just staring into the wall thinking, opening Youtube or Reddit from time to time (to "relax" a bit), and I writing code once in a while :)
Any chance your program can export files to work with a cnc machine? Sure, just tell me what format does that machine accepts? Is than an open format? Can you use e.g. an SVG?
Manufacturers often create their proprietary formats to make you dependent on their software.
the below is a reply to the above
G-Code is pretty common, although I'm unsure as to what Z-axis information you would capture in an image format unless it was texturized somehow and interpreted that as topography? Maybe like the color coded images to show 3 dimensions in a planar view. I know lasewaterjet cutting and similar that do 2D operations typically ask me for a DXF file or equivalent. I've never used Photopea for this (or even tried) but typically I take a vector format and import into CAD software to generate a DXF for this purpose. I know my media guy can never get me a format I need to import a logo and such for mechanical design. A DXF or similar vector would be amazing if it doesn't exist already. Hi, would you be able to write this into our GitHub? https://github.com/photopea/photopea/issues . And most importantly, would you be able to discuss it there with me, if I have any questions? I never worked with any CNC machine.
Hi !! Can I know about your backend ? There is a webhosting which stores one HTML, one CSS and several JS files. Photopea is written in Javascript and runs completely in a computer of the visitor.
the below is a reply to the above
Have you used any frontend frameworks? No, I wrote my own Javascript, HTML and CSS. I usually prefer to use what I know, instead of learning how to use new tools :)
the below is another reply to the original answer
How do you handle users that pay for premium? There must be some sort of database right? Yes, there is a database. I just wanted to say, that out of these 7 million people, the database is needed maybe for a hundred of them.
the below is another reply to the original question
Not without dinner first Take my upvote, too :)
Are there any new browser features or HTML features that will make your code a lot simpler? I would love if browsers let Photopea know, when Ctrl+T was pressed on the keyboard. People have been using the Ctrl+T shortcut in Adobe Photoshop for decades and almost every week, someone asks why it does not work in Photopea.
At the moment, when you press Ctrl+T in any browser, it opens a new tab (panel), and a we can not do anything about it :( I have been personally arguing about it with browser developers for over five years.
"Fighting" with browser developers is quite a big part of my work, which is quite sad :(
the below is a reply to the above
When in fullscreen Ctrl+T works in both Chrome and Edge, it triggers the transform tool. Maybe prompt the user to switch Photopea to fullscreen ? The website feels like a standalone app so it makes sense to get rid of the browser UI anyway. I think the Ctrl+T should be usable even when not in the fullscreen mode.
the below is another reply to the original answer
I'm sure you must've researched this thoroughly over the years but maybe stackoverflow seems to have a couple good answers on disabling new tab shortcut keys. Maybe have a look? Esp these 2: 1 - https://stackoverflow.com/questions/38442886/chrome-disable-ctrlt-shortcut - you could make your own extension and then make that extension do the "Free Transform"? 2 - https://stackoverflow.com/questions/18625091/how-to-disable-firefox-new-tab-action-when-pressin-ctrl-and-clicking-a-link-wi I'm no good at js but maybe have a look... I guess I could also just make my own web browser and ask users to install it :D
How about a Desktop version? That'd be great! You can go to Photopea.com and press More - Install Photopea. It will add an icon to your homescreen, which will start Photopea without the browser UI. But it works only in the latest Chrome, Edge and Opera. https://www.facebook.com/photopea/photos/a.1703140446613703/2120885974839146
the below is a reply to the above
What Api does that? Seems chromium only but i wouldn't care. Never heard of that. It is called PWA - progressive web apps, and the app can trigger the installing process https://medium.com/@dhormale/install-pwa-on-windows-desktop-via-google-chrome-browser-6907c01eebe4
What are your plans for the video editor, and how can I keep up to date on its progress? (video editor here that loves what you did with photopea) I do not have any specific plans about the video editor yet. You can follow Photopea on Facebook or Twitter to know about the progress (links in my original post) :)
You mentioned your income is through ads. Have you thought of other avenues for revenue sources or ways to increase your current revenue even more to be able to hire more employees? Yes, I have thought about it, but I don't know about any ways, which could work better than ads.
Most of the current Photopea user can not afford to pay for the software, so I don't want to make half of features available only after the payment.
the below is a reply to the above
Would a premium version that's identical in features but without ads be an option? Unless this is already a thing? It is already a thing :) You can hide ads for $10 for three months. Also, there is no subscription, you pay manually any time you want. Ads come back once it runs out :)
What things does Photoshop do better than your alternative? Photoshop can open almost all RAW image formats (in their Camera Raw program). I think Adobe pays the camera manufacturers, so that they allow Adobe to open raw files from their cameras.
At the moment, Photopea can open only four RAW formats, which cover around 80% of the market.
Do you think that photopea has been a success? I use it for work everyday and I certainly think it is! I think it is the most useful thing I made in my life so far, so it is a success :)
Good stuff. Love a free image editor. Why is this already on the front page, with just 6 comments and 22 points? I don't know much about the Reddit algorithm, but I think it is also about how old the post is. E.g. if you get 20 points in 5 minutes, you will be on top of a post, which received 50 points in an hour.
What's your favourite video game? Also thank you the amount if complete trash I have cropped using photopea is immeasurable I received my first computer when I was 13 and PC games seemed too complicated to me (and most of them were in English, which I did not know well). I never had a playstation or a gameboy. So I never played video games much.
The first game I "understood" and truly enjoyed playing was Serious Sam :) I also spent A LOT of time playing Clash of Clans.
Will it stay free or is there a possibility that you're gonna put a price on that? Photopea has been free to use since the first release seven years ago, and I would like to keep it free to use in the future, too.
Love photopea, I use it all the time! Does anyone trouble you with any legal issues since it's basically an online photoshop? Thanks! I think the similarity of the interface of Photoshop and Photopea (and other photo editors) is a good thing. Imagine if each brand of computers had a different layout of a keyboard, because they wanted to be "different". I am very happy, that I can simply take any keyboard and start typing on it right away.
Maybe one time someone will come and say, that we have to make the background red, because the dark grey color is already used in their program. And we have to rename the Brush tool to "hair on a stick tool", because the Brush tool is already used in their program. But I hope such time will never come :D
the below is a reply to the above
Please make an April 1st version with copyright-friendly tools, that would be awesome. Brush – Hair on a stick Bucket – Metal container Move – Relocate and so on. Edit: April Tools’ Day That is a graet idea! :D
How do you approach creating something that is intuitive? How do you know that your logic is universally understood? Are there any examples of tools, tasks, icons that you have had to change based on feedback? Thank you and great work! The user interface of Photopea has been evolving for seven years and there were probably hundreds of suggestions from users, which I listened to and modified, to get what we have now :)
Hi Ivan, I've used Photopea for a couple of years for basic editing. Congratulations - it's an amazing tool. The only feature that prevents me from upgrading to a paid version is the font selection interface. There are far too many fonts available, they load slowly, are all obscure and not represented well in preview. Would you consider curating/refining the available fonts? Hi, thanks! It is completely fine to use Photopea for free, you don't have to pay for Premium :)
You can mark some fonts with a star, and then, you can display only the "starred" fonts. You can use filters to see e.g. only "sans" fonts and hide "comic" or "handwritten" fonts. You can enable Latin-1 and other language categories, to see only fonts with many letters (only professional fonts support more than 200 letters).
Have you experienced any pushback/pressure from the bigger players? No :) I have been in touch with people from Google, Adobe, Corel, Canva and other companies, evrybody was very friendly and helpful :)
Thanks for making Photopea- I'm certainly loving it. Will there ever be an offline version? Hi, thanks!
A big challenge is, that Photopea can not use fonts from your computer, and it downloads fonts from our server, when you choose to use that font. So changing fonts would not work in an offline version (except of a couple of fonts we could pre-store).
I think the amount of time people spend using their computer offline is decreasing, and will be almost zero at some point :)
the below is a reply to the above
If I use a font I have purchased, is it easy to implement, if you don't have that font on your server? Hi, just press File - Open in Photopea to load a font (TTF or OTF file) :)
Do you plan to keep photopea solely browser based? Many people think that browser programs are slower or "less capable" than desktop programs, but it is not true in the last five years. So a "download and install" version of Photopea would not have many advantages.
I could provide an offline version of Photopea, but at the moment, most of money come from ads, which would not work offline :/
the below is a reply to the above
You can try and make an Electron app, I know its essentially a browser but it would give that "native" feel to users. Hi, you can already press More - Install Photopea in Photopea and use it as a PWA :)
Great. Now can we please start working on a viable PDF editor that doesn't cost hundreds of dollars per year? Photopea can already do it to some degree :) have you tried it?
The PDF format was not meant to be edited further. But we are improving.
Thanks for developing Photopea. After your last AMA, I started using it. Is there a way for size of a new document to default to image dimensions on the clipboard? That's one of the handiest things in Photoshop so you don't have to either enter manually or overguess then crop down later. The size of a new document should be set by default to the dimension of the content of the clipboard.
But it works only in Chrome, Edge and Opera. Firefox did not implement the necessary standard yet. Don't know about Safari :/
You mentioned you plan on making a video editor. Have you considered an Illustrator alternative as well? Photopea already has many vector-related capabilities. It can open, edit and save SVG and PDF files. Somehow, I feel like a video editor would be more fun to make than an advanced vector editor.
the below is a reply to the above
Didn't know it supported editing SVGs. How does it compare to something like Inkscape? The interface is a lot different than Inkscape. Just try it and see how it works :)
I know this is a long shot, but any chance I can join on board with little to no knowledge so I can learn (for free of course)? 😁 It could be doing menial tasks for all I care. If not, any advice for someone like me wanting to change career path and code? I'm just tired of what I've been doing so I just recently starting some online coding courses but would like to learn more hands on if possible. Hoping to change career path for the future. Well, if I spend time teaching you, I will have to invest less time into developing Photopea :D
I have been often tired of what I did, I get tired of Photopea-related work from time to time. There is not just a bad job and a good job, there are many things in between. But whenever you have to choose between a simple goal and a hard goal, don't be afraid to go for a hard goal :)
How did you begin to scale up the workforce? What positions did you prioritise and how did the recruitment process go? I'm in an early process of starting up a web application and can see it being difficult going from working alone on a project to trusting people to share the same determination to grow it. Thanks I do not have any team, I still work on Photopea alone.
Hi. Great stuffs. I will definitely give it a try soon. May I give a suggestion ? I use GIMP for Image editing since I usually have to make some illustrations for my work. And GIMP provides me with the function of adding Text from another format, like LaTeX (to write math formula). Do you think this would be possible to implement in your app ? Hi, is the LaTeX text rasterized to pixels after you insert it? Or you can modify it in GIMP?
the below is a reply to the above
the LINUX version of GIMP has a module in the Render section which allows me to type in the LaTeX code and product an image of the formula. I am not really used to the terminology of image like vector or raster image. But once the formula is produced, it is not modifiable. So if I messed up, I have to redo the process from the beginning. We don't have such thing in Photopea at the moment.
I used to write my masters thesis in https://www.sharelatex.com/ . You can also convert LaTeX to a PNG image here: http://latex2png.com/ (right-click the image - Copy Image, and paste it in Photopea).
Can it do animations? The only thing I use photoshop for at this point is it's animation ability, especially it's keyframe animations, where you can make a single frame last however many seconds you like. If it can do that, i can finally delete photoshop. Hi, we do not have such animation capabilities as Photoshop. But there is a special mechanism for making animations from layers: https://www.photopea.com/learn/animations
the below is a reply to the above
This kind of animation capability is exactly what I was looking for. Does it allow you to view the animation as a preview before you choose EXPORT? Of course :) Just drag-and-drop a GIF into Photopea and try to export it as a GIF, it will take you around seven seconds :)
what was your eureka moment for photopea that whoa this is possible? Sometimes, when I learn about a new algorithm or a method, I wonder how elegant and ingenious it is :) Like - the person who came up with it should have been really smart, I wish I was also that smart :D
Have you considered using Patreon? Have you considered letting people subscribe for a fixed period if no ads? Hi, we already offer a Premium account, where you pay and it hides ads for a period of time. I know about Patreon, but I feel a bit uncomfortable about accepting money for nothing in return.
Is there a downloadable version available/in the works? You can go to www.Photopea.com and press More - Install Photopea, to get an icon to your homescreen.
https://www.facebook.com/photopea/photos/a.1703140446613703/2120885974839146
i tried using it on my display tablet, there doesn't seem to be any pressure sensitivity? Hi, try to update your tablet (drivers, browser, os, etc). But it works on the latest iPad and on my old Android phone (it tracks the pressure of my finger). If it does not help, try to report it to the tablet manufacturer (as it will not work in any website, not just Photopea).
Is there support for sprite editing tools or just tools in general for game devs? Do you mean generating sprites, etc? It can do most of things Photoshop can do, but if you need something more, you can always suggest it here :) https://github.com/photopea/photopea/issues
What made you decide to create a free photo editor? It was just an experiment of analyzing PSD files in a browser. I gradually improved it. I did not want to make a photo editor during the first two years of work. But at some point, I realised - hey, it should not be that hard to make it into a photo editor.
How is this compared to GIMP? Hi, you can read this article: https://www.techrepublic.com/article/photoshop-alternative-no-its-not-gimp/
But it is about Photopea from two years ago. Photopea improved significantly since then.
So is it WASM or just regular old JS + WebGL? I found this looking for a browser based paint.net alternative a while back and thought it was awesome, but the controls were a bit too advanced/inaccessible for my requirements. If you're serious about growing the dev team I'm a self employed engineer if you want to hit me up. I wrote only JS and GLSL (for GPU processing). I use three WASM libraries, which I did not make. Thanks for your offer, but I would like to hire someone I could work with in person.
I’ve been using photopea ever since your previous AMA a year ago. My question is: how often are do you AMA and how did it impact traffic to photopea? I did only three AMAs with about a year between them. The traffic grows by about 10 - 20%, which lasts for a day or two :)
How much time have you invested in creating this tool? Or what's your weekly time investment? I never measured it, but I think it is about the "regular" 40 hours a week.
Did you know most of what you needed before starting on Photopea or did you learn as you went along with adding new features? What unexpected difficulties presented themselves while working on Photopea? It is like I knew how to use a chisel, but I never carved a statue that big.
I learned many practical things (state-of-art algorithms etc), I used many things I learned at the university, which I thought I will never use :)
How do I start contributing to Photopea? What would you like to contribute with? You can help us find bugs or help beginners at our subreddit: www.reddit.com/photopea
I hope this hasn't been asked, but why haven't you made a downloadable/fully offline version of your program yet? I know that as soon as you load the site you can use it offline, but there are times when people need to edit pictures without any internet connection at all. The online version makes it much easier to release new versions and do updates. I update Photopea about 30 times a week (with minor fixes).
Also, it feels a little uncofmortable to imagine, that someone is using a two year old version of Photopea and is cursing me because of some bug, which I already fixed, and I can not do anything about it at that moment :/
What technologies did you use to build this? I used Javascript and WebGL :)
It's really great that you're offering an alternative to Photoshop! I was wondering, what language or software did you use to write Photopea? I wrote my code in Javascript, but in my opinion, the language is not important at all.
The best language is the one you know how to use. Also, for me, it is important, that there is a way to execute my code fast, which is possible with Javascript in modern browsers.
[removed] Hi, you should not use Auto-translate, as we have a professional Swedish translation. Just press More - Language - Svenska. You can switch languages without restarting Photopea.
Photopea.com should be in Swedish the first time you open it, if Swedish is set as your main language.
What's your End User Licensing Agreement looking like? How is this licensed? I like to know before end users start requesting such as im sure someone now wants to install this in a corporate environment... Photope works in your computer and it never sends any data outside your computer. It is just like buying the cheapest calculator and using it. You don't get a licence to use such calculator, the numbers that you enter into a calculator don't leave the calculator.
Our terms of service are here: https://www.photopea.com/privacy.html
What's your opinion of the current state and direction of front-end development? I think I don't know much about it. I write my JS code in notepad and that code is precisely the code which runs in the browser of a user (without any modification). I did not change the way I develop webapps in the last six years.
the below is a reply to the above
Straight up Windows Notepad? Not notepad++ or Visual Studio Code or Atom or anything else??? I use Notepad++ :)
Are you planning in translating it? If so, I'd be glad to work on the italian version. Hi, it is already translated into 40 langauges, just press More - Language - Italiano :)
Hey Ivan, i'm very impressed by your work, but i'm an avid GIMP user. As you can imagine switching editors is always a hassle once you've got used to one. So can you give me some bullet points why it would be worth to switch from GIMP to Photopea? Thanks for the AMA! Hi, I think you should stay with GIMP, since you already know how to use it :) And if there is nothing specific you miss in GIMP, you probably don't need such features :)
Hey ivanhoe90 I noticed today that the pen tool behaves backward when clicking the second point and dragging. It's like the curve goes the opposite direction than anyone would expect. I almost filed a github issue on it but I just didn't have time. Is that a bug? Oh, I am very sorry, it is fixed now.
Hi, I wanted to know what's your story. That is your biography. And what did you study too get here? How did you get the idea for photopea? Hi, I gave a talk about it in France a year ago :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZmaeC_Ma5A
DUDE! Your program saved me in the final semester of my Masters. I needed to upload images and I don't have a scanner so I used my phone and fixed the colour and tones in Photopea. Bless you for your hard work. I guess my question is what kind of cheese do you like? Thanks a lot! If you only knew how happy I am about such comments :)
I like all cheeses, as I think they are all amazing, each one in a different way.
I love this software and I use it daily, Every time I think to myself "I wonder if can also do" the answer has been yes. I love showing my co-workers this software while working in Citrix, it always blows people away that this works. Question: Any change of seeing a feature that doesn't automatically export local files to the download folder? I would love to select where I want to automatically save them or just save as > location (The google drive system already amazing though) It's that one minor thing that makes me end up with File(17).png Hi, thanks! The saving mechanism depends on the settings of the web browser. The browser usually handles the file saving the same way for all websites. So just change the browser settings - make the browser ask you about where you want the files to be saved (we can not do anything about it as a website).
Do you think Photopea can have more active users than Photoshop? And why? It is hard to tell. There are many features in Photoshop and other editors, which Photopea can not do. Even if Photopea has more active users, it does not mean it makes more money.
Well I'm 9 hours late and maybe it was already asked and answered, but if you feel like responding... do you have to recreate stuff like puppet warp or quick select from scratch? Like you have to go back and read some old white paper on the algorithm, and then sort of reinvent the wheel? Hi, that is correct, there are usually no free implementations of such algorithms, and if there are, they are not in Javascript or are not good enough :/
Actually, the Puppet Warp is based on a 2009 paper from Takeo Igarashi. I found a mistake in it and I wrote him an email, and it took me several emails to persuade him that he really made a mistake in his paper :) But many other authors refuse to look deep into papers they wrote a long time ago.
Who would you prefer Photopea being aquired by, and why? I don't know. I am not looking for an acquisition at the moment.
I'm getting into video editing. I'm a noob to photoshop and video editing. Are there any tools in this that can complement my video editing? I was thinking of being able to create custom graphics for the videos but what else are the capabilities? I dont know much about video editing, but you can use Photopea for photo editing. I think the more time you spend learning a tool, before actually using it, the less time you will spend in total (e.g. doing something by "trial and error" in 3 hours vs. learning it in 1 hour and doing it in 30 minutes, because you learned how to do it).
How were you able to acquire such a vast amount of knowledge about editors and programming? I studied programming at the university for many years. Learning how to use Photoshop or any other editor is easier, but still can take weeks or months.
the below is a reply to the above
I'm currently studying programming at uni too. Am I correct in assuming that the vast majority of the code for photopea is JavaScript since it's a web application? Yes, I wrote my programs in Javascript :) But I did not have any Javascript class ever in my life. I think the programming skills are not related to the knowledge of a specific programming language.
Could you comment on https://github.com/photopea/JS-guide a bit? I don't quite understand why you're against using syntactic sugar. Especially let, const, and strict equality. I'm not claiming to be an expert at all, but most of these guidelines are in opposition to modern day JS practices. So I was just curious if you could elaborate on your decision making! I think it is up to you what you write. But I am used to writing as "simple" code as possible, and it just looks cleaner to me if you use "var" instead of let/const (and it has no impact on the speed).
[deleted] I think the knowledge is the most important. Also, it should be someone friendly, calm, rational, etc :D
Hey, I don't know if this has been asked before but since you have mentioned that Photopea can run offline after it's been loaded (meaning that there is no server backend), have you ever considered packing the app into a desktop app (e.g. with Electron or nw.js)? Hi, I think opening a website is faster and more comfortable than downloading and installing something. Also, the electron version would be hard to update (unless it is just an iframe with Photopea inside it).
Have you ever considered making Photopea into a mobile app? Hi, half of our users use Photopea on phones. It works quite well. If you look for "photopea" on Youtube, most of videos are recorded on phones.
My Reddit client doesn’t have a comment search feature, but have you considered bundling an electron version for people to download? Seems like a quick win, and even gets around ad blockers. Or if it’s a premium only offering, is just icing on the cake Hi, I was a bit lazy to maintain a separate version of Photopea. I don't see any advantages it would have over the basic version.

2020.09.19 20:55 StevenStevens43 Humber the Hun

Humber the Hun
Humber the Hun:
Humber the Hun was supposed to have been part of the invasions of Albion, beginning in 1112 BC.
Humber the Hun
Humber the Hun (Gaelic: Emer or Éber mac Ír, or Éber Don mac Ír Ulaid) son of Ír and grandson of Miled, was a legendary king of so-called "Huns" who, according to Gafridian legend, invaded the British Isles in about the 12th century BC. His people successfully conquered Scotia but he himself was drowned during his campaign against Southern Britain. His sons became the Kings of Ulster and ultimately Dál Riata, the earliest Kingdom of Scotland. At some point, he began to equated with his namesake Donn, the Gaelic God of the Dead.
Latin:
Now, nobody knows who the Huns are.
Particularly modern Latin speakers.
In the Latin language, Scotti means Gaels.
Scotti
Scoti or Scotti is a Latin name for the Gaels,[1]

Hun:
However, even today, the Gaelic word for Scot, is Hun.
This means that Gaelic speakers might have a slightly better grasp on who the Huns might have been, than the modern Romanised Latin speaker.
It also means that when modern day Scots during football matches with the Auld enemy sing "Go home ya Hun", they are actually "wrong".
The Huns were the Scoloti.
Luckily the Scots don't face too much shame regarding this fact, as the other half of the Auld enemy are also unaware of the fact that they are infact "not" the Huns.
Pop culture
Modern Ulster Scots and other Scots Protestants are still referred to as Huns by Gaels.[10

Hungary:
Now obviously, the word "Hun" is pretty much synonymous with the country named Hungary, suggesting that Huns may have certain origins in this area.
After-all, Humber the Hun is said to have arrived in the Humber from Germany.
Of course, there was no such place as Germany in 1112 BC.
It was Gaul, and Gaul was a name that pertained to the entire area of mainland inhabited by Gaelic speaking Gauls, which at this point in history, would have included Hungary.
Mediaeval history
When Locrinus raided Humber's ships after his death, he found Humber's consort Estrildis,[2][3] the daughter of the King of Germany there.

Hungarians:
The modern day word for "Hun", as in Hungary, derived from the Huns from Eurasia, not the Huns from Humber.
Well, not immediately anyway.
Etymology
The "H" in the name of Hungary (and Latin Hungaria) is most likely due to founded historical associations with the Huns, who had settled Hungary prior to the Avars.

Scythian sphere:
However, the land of Hungary pre-dated the country of Hungary, and back in the Iron age, Hungary did not exist, and was infact part of the Scythian sphere.
History of Hungary
Hungary in its modern (post-1946) borders roughly corresponds to the Great Hungarian Plain (the Pannonian basin). During the Iron Age, it was at the boundary of Celtic, Illyrian and Iranian (Scythian) cultural spheres.

Royal Scoloti:
Now, Scythia was a "big" region.
It also took in an Iranian area known as Sogdiana.
The aristocrats were known as the Royal Scoloti.
Scythians
.[10][13] Based in what is modern-day Ukraine and southern Russia, the Scythians called themselves Scoloti and were led by a nomadic warrior aristocracy known as the Royal Scythians.

Sogdiana:
Now Sogdiana, whilst being part of Scythia, in turn, ruled an empire which stretched to the border of China.
Sogdia
Sogdia (/ˈsɒɡdiə/) (Sogdian: soɣd) or Sogdiana was an ancient Iranian civilization that at different times included territory located in present-day Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan, such as Samarkand, Bukhara, Khujand, Panjikent, and Shahrisabz. Sogdiana was also a province of the Achaemenid Empire,

Sogdiana princesses:
During the annexation of the empire by Alexander the Great, Alexander had Sogdiana princesses sent to breed with his Greek friends.

It is likely that Scotlands current day capital city of Edinburgh (Auld Edina), from the root word Dun Eideann, is derived from the Royal Scoloti sogdiana.

Xiongnu:
Now, this is where the Xiongnu come in to this.
The Xiongnu were a "Nomadic" tribe, and one might know to suspect, that when you see the word "Nomadic" it is likely referring to a certain Aryan peoples that got Nomadism in to their DNA after requiring to leave their homelands during the younger dryas.
Xiongnu
The Xiongnu (Chinese: 匈奴; Wade–Giles: Hsiung-nu, [ɕjʊ́ŋ.nǔ]) were a tribal confederation[3] of nomadic peoples who, according to ancient Chinese sources, inhabited the eastern Eurasian Steppe from the 3rd century BC to the late 1st century AD. Chinese sources report that Modu Chanyu, the supreme leader after 209 BC, founded the Xiongnu Empire.[4]

Huaxia people:
Now Chinese history draws a distinction between the more civilised Huaxia people (Indigenous Mongolians) and the more barbaric Nomadic Xiongnu.
Early history
.[19] It also draws a distinct line between the settled Huaxia people (Chinese) to the pastoral nomads (Xiongnu), characterizing it as two polar groups in the sense of a civilization versus an uncivilized society
Hua-Yi distinction:
It is called the Hua-Yi distinction.
Hua-Yi distinction
The distinction between Huá and (Chinese: ; pinyin: Huá Yí zhī biàn), also known as Sino–barbarian dichotomy,[1] is an ancient Chinese concept that differentiated a culturally defined "China" (called Huá, Huaxia 華夏; Huáxià, or Xià ) from cultural or ethnic outsiders (, conventionally "barbarians"). Although Yí is often translated as "barbarian", other translations of this term in English include "foreigners",[2]
Modu Chanyu:
Now, the Xiongnu under Mody Chanyu, almost overthrew the Chinese emperor.
State formation
After forging internal unity, Modu Chanyu expanded the empire on all sides. To the north he conquered a number of nomadic peoples, including the Dingling of southern Siberia. He crushed the power of the Donghu people of eastern Mongolia and Manchuria as well as the Yuezhi in the Hexi Corridor of Gansu, where his son, Jizhu, made a skull cup out of the Yuezhi king. Modu also reoccupied all the lands previously taken by the Qin general Meng Tian.
Under Modu's leadership, the Xiongnu threatened the Han dynasty, almost causing Emperor Gaozu, the first Han emperor, to lose his throne in 200 BC.[31]

Chinese princesses and Great wall of China:
The Chinese decided to build a great wall, as a border to define the territory between Xiongnu and China, and to attempt to appease the Xiongnu, they began sending them Chinese princesses, along with other gifts including money and alcohol.
Marraige diplomacy
The Han sent princesses to marry Xiongnu leaders in their efforts to stop the border raids. Along with arranged marriages, the Han sent gifts to bribe the Xiongnu to stop attacking.[31] After the defeat at Pingcheng in 200 BC, the Han emperor abandoned a military solution to the Xiongnu threat. Instead, in 198 BC , the courtier Liu Jing&action=edit&redlink=1) [zh)] was dispatched for negotiations. The peace settlement eventually reached between the parties included a Han princess given in marriage to the chanyu (called heqin) (Chinese: 和親; lit.: 'harmonious kinship'); periodic gifts to the Xiongnu of silk, distilled beverages and rice; equal status between the states; and the Great Wall as mutual border.
Cant beat them, join them:
However, the raids did not stop, and the Hans Chinese decided to attempt to forge an alliance with them.
Marraige diplomacy
The Xiongnu also practiced marriage alliances with Han dynasty officers and officials who defected to their side. The older sister of the Chanyu (the Xiongnu ruler) was married to the Xiongnu General Zhao Xin, the Marquis of Xi who was serving the Han dynasty. The daughter of the Chanyu was married to the Han Chinese General Li Ling after he surrendered and defected.[39][40][41][42] Another Han Chinese General who defected to the Xiongnu was Li Guangli, general in the War of the Heavenly Horses, who also married a daughter of the Chanyu.[43]
Envoy:
Behind the backs of the Xiongnu, the Hans Chinese sent an envoy to go and explore the Western world and try and find an ally to help fight the Xiongnu, however the information received back from the envoy, put China into a state of emergency, and expelling the Xiongnu became a matter of urgency.
It is not know exactly what the message was, but i assume it was along the lines of "those people are everywhere".
Han xiongnu war
The Han dynasty made preparations for war when the Han Emperor Wu dispatched the explorer Zhang Qian to explore the mysterious kingdoms to the west and to form an alliance with the Yuezhi people in order to combat the Xiongnu. During this time Zhang married a Xiongnu wife, who bore him a son, and gained the trust of the Xiongnu leader.[45][46][47][48][49][50][51] While Zhang Qian did not succeed in this mission,[52] his reports of the west provided even greater incentive to counter the Xiongnu hold on westward routes out of China,
Link for photo

Southern Xiongnu & Northern xiongnu:
The result of the war, was that the Chinese would be successful in putting a barrier between themselves and the Xiongnu, by placing a southern Xiongnu between themselves and a Northern Xiongnu.
Southern Xiongnu and Northern Xiongnu
In 48 AD, a confederation of eight Xiongnu tribes in Bi's power base in the south, with a military force totalling 40,000 to 50,000 men, seceded from Punu's kingdom and acclaimed Bi as chanyu. This kingdom became known as the Southern Xiongnu.
600 year empire destroyed:
In the year 439 AD, 600 years of Xiongnu living in this area came to an end, and finally China rid themselves of the last remnants of Xiongnu.
Juqu and)
By 439, the Juqu power was destroyed by the Northern Wei. Their remnants were then settled in the city of Gaochang before being destroyed by the Rouran.
Tribute:
Now, the Xiongnu done to the Chinese, exactly what the Huns would do to the Romans.
Significance
The Xiongnu confederation was unusually long-lived for a steppe empire. The purpose of raiding China was not simply for goods, but to force the Chinese to pay regular tribute.
Contemporary understanding:
Now, believe it or not, the Xiongnu being the same group as the Huns, is actually now the contemporary view amongst historians and scholars.
However contemporary, is not the same thing as general consensus.
Huns
.[70] Although the theory that the Xiongnu were precursors of the Huns known later in Europe is now accepted by many scholars, it has yet to become a consensus view.
Link for photo
Hunnic invasion
Turkic descendency:
Now, Turks claim that the Xiongnu were Turkish, because they are descended from Xiongnu.
However ascended, and descended, are two different things.
I am sure it is possible, that by the time the Sogdians came out of Mongolia, they were now quite Turkic.
Turkic
Uyghur Khagans claimed descent from the Xiongnu (according to Chinese history Weishu, the founder of the Uyghur Khaganate was descended from a Xiongnu ruler).[86]
Both the 7th-century Chinese History of the Northern Dynasties[87] and the Book of Zhou,[88] an inscription in the Sogdian language, report the Göktürks to be a subgroup of the Xiongnu.[89][90]
Iranian ancestors:
However, scholars tend to agree that when the Xiongnu first arrived in Mongolia, they were Northern Iranian speakers.
Iranian
Harold Walter Bailey proposed an Iranian origin of the Xiongnu, recognizing all the earliest Xiongnu names of the 2nd century BC as being of the Iranian type.[9] This theory is supported by turkologist Henryk Jankowski).[10] Central Asian scholar Christopher I. Beckwith notes that the Xiongnu name could be a cognate of Scythian, Saka and Sogdia, corresponding to a name for Northern Iranians.[27][
Chinese Hun:
Now, the word the Chinese used to refer to the Xiongnu as, translates pretty much in to English as "Hun".
Some may mistake this as the word "Hun" having Chinese origins.
However, it is more likely that the Chinese referred to them by a word similar to Hun, because, that is what the Xiongnu of the time likely referred to themselves as.

2020.09.17 18:44 LandOwn9852 Patristic Evidence for the New Testament (by Bart D. Ehrman)

Yesterday I discussed very briefly the benefits and difficulties of versional evidence for establishing the text of the New Testament. As it turns out, it is a very big and complex issue, or rather sets of issues. There are large and difficult books written on very small aspects of the versions. One, still authoritative, treatment of the whole shooting match, with extensive bibliography (which is now, of course, out of date), is one of the magna opera of my mentor, Bruce Metzger, The Early Versions of the New Testament: Their Origin, Transmission, and Limitations (1977). It’s a great book, arguably his most impressive.
In this post I would like, to move into a very brief discussion of one other area of evidence for the text of the New Testament, the Patristic sources. The term “patristic” stands for “fathers” (Latin: patres) of the church – that is, the early church authors who quoted the books of the New Testament in the course of their writings. This too is an exceedingly thorny area of scholarly investigation, and one that I have long been deeply interested in. It is the area that I did my PhD research and dissertation in.
So here’s the deal. As I have pointed out before, we don’t have complete manuscripts of the New Testament until the middle of the fourth century – some 300 years after the books were written. We do have earlier fragmentary papyri manuscripts of this, that, or the other part of the NT, and for that we are all exceedingly grateful. But one problem with manuscripts is that we almost never know exactly when or where they were produced. And yet, that kind of specificity is very important for us if we want to know about how the text of the NT was transmitted over the years and centuries.
Here’s why. Suppose we have a verse that is worded in two different ways in various manuscripts (the differences may be large, they may be small, but they are in any event differences).
THE REST OF THIS POST IS FOR MEMBERS ONLY. If you don’t belong yet, JOIN UP!! It doesn’t cost much, and every penny goes to charity!
If we know exactly where and when every single manuscript attesting both forms of the text were produced, that might help us decide which form of the text is the older one and which is the later “corruption.” If, for example, we could determine that all the manuscripts that have one form of the text come from the area around Rome starting in the fifth century, whereas the other form of the text is found in all sorts of manuscripts from all sorts of times and places, then we could probably argue that the former form is a local corruption.
The problem is that we don’t know when and where the vast bulk of our manuscripts were produced. The scribes don’t tell us their dates or locations. If manuscripts are written in Greek, then obviously they were produced in the Greek-speaking part of the empire; and we can date manuscripts palaeographically, at least in theory, within about 50 years. So that’s good. But it’s not as good as we would like.
This is where the citations of the church fathers become most useful. My dissertation was on the quotations of the Gospels in the writings of Didymus the Blind. We know exactly when Didymus lived and died. And we know exactly where he lived. And so in theory, if we analyze his various writings – we have a handful of biblical commentaries that he “wrote” (he actually dictated them, since he was, after all, blind) – and isolate all of his quotations of the New Testament, we are able to compare them with our surviving manuscripts (say, Greek, Latin, and Coptic) to see which manuscripts are closest to the ones that he most likely had at his disposal. And that would tell us what the manuscripts were like in his precise time and place (in his case, in late fourth century Alexandria Egypt).
If we could do that with an entire range of Patristic sources, it would allow us to see how the text was changed by scribes even in times and places for which we do not have any manuscripts. And that would allow us both to see how the text got changed over the years (and possibly why), and where it got changed, and when, and, as a result, what the “unchanged” text (i.e. the text written by the author) probably looked like.
So this kind of evidence is extraordinarily important. But it is also unusually complicated. In part that’s because we don’t have the original writings for any of the church fathers (this should start sounding familiar) but only manuscripts from later times that were produced by scribes who sometimes changed the texts they were copying. So the text of the church father has to be reconstructed before it can be analyzed for text-critical purposes. And there’s a particularly thorny issue involved with this: if a sixth century scribe was copying the writings of a fourth century author, he, the scribe, may well have changed the wording of the author’s scripture quotations to make them conform with the text as he, the scribe, was himself more familiar with.
But also, even more problematic, the church fathers – in their surviving writings — often do not quote their New Testament texts accurately and did not mean to do so. Sometimes they give long quotations that appear to be word-for-word what was in their (now no longer surviving) manuscripts . But at other times they quoted their texts loosely (as preachers and others do today still); other times they simply paraphrased their texts; other times they simply referred to or mentioned passages. All of these quotations, adaptations, and allusions have to be examined carefully, to see if they probably represent the actual texts sitting in front of the author or not.
To complicate matters further, some of our Patristic texts are not in the language that the authors actually wrote in. Most of the writings of the late second-century Irenaeus are preserved only in Latin, even though he wrote in Greek. So too with much of the voluminous output of the early third century Origen. And so on.
Each father presents still other problems. Origen, for example, who is probably our most important early patristic source, moved from Alexandria to Caesarea part way through his life. So it’s important to know which books he wrote in which location, and to ask: did he take his Alexandrian manuscripts of the Bible with him, or did he start using the manuscripts that were available to him in Caesarea? And take Didymus, my guy. He was blind. So how do we know what his manuscripts looked like if he never actually saw one himself? And so on.
So, the short story is that this is a very difficult field of research. But it’s also a highly important one

2020.09.16 15:52 humansareboring Translation issue with Verum Rex

Mini Latin rant here, so I apologize. But...
Verum Rex does NOT translate to True King, which is what I see a lot of people assuming in this fandom. It's even listed as that on the KHwiki.
However.
Rex does mean King. It's a masculine nominative noun. (Which just means it's the subject of a phrase/sentence and it needs masculine adjectives or modifiers.)
Verum can mean True. It's either the masculine accusative form of the adjective - so it has to be used with a masculine object of a sentence/phrase - or it's neuter - so it has to be used with neuter nouns only.
Therein lies the problem. In Latin, you have to match number, case, and gender between the adjective and the noun it's modifying. Verum can't be an adjective that fits with Rex because they don't match in gender AND case at any given time. The correct form should be Verus Rex.
If we were to translate Verum Rex properly, we'd have to treat Verum as an adverb - so we get the translation Truly King or Truly the King.
That concludes my Ted Talk. Other Latin scholars, feel free to chime in if I missed something that validates the translation True King.
Tldr: The title should either be Latinized as Verus Rex or be translated as Truly the King for grammatical reasons.

2020.09.16 14:16 JimeDorje Translation correction for "Luceo non uro"

My Dad has floated the idea of him and I getting matching tattoos. He's really into Scottish culture (we're not Scottish) and I have a policy against tattooing the Latin Alphabet on my body (I think they're almost universally bad, so I just decided to avoid the regret). And I've been studying Tibetan history for a long time so I was thinking of getting mine in Tibetan rather than Latin.
That said, while "I shine, not burn" seems like a pretty easy statement to translate, I just wanted to double check before I commit to this.
"ང་གསལ་མ་སྲེག་"
If anyone can just check my work on this or offer an improvement (way too many words related to shining and burning) I'd be really grateful. I gravitated away from all the variations of "'char" because it seemed to me that those seem to blur the line between shining and burning, whereas "gsal" and "sreg" seem to be quite distinct.

2020.09.15 15:00 BijouX677 TuneTuesday: The Bells of Notre Dame (The Hunchback of Notre Dame)

The Bells of Notre Dame - Here - is the First Song in Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame. It's a very grand and beautiful song. It's also dark and saddening. It's a composition of various emotions and tones. It's happy and cheerful, dark and scary, and grand and mysterious all at once.
General Thoughts
I think this is a very thought provoking song. You'll see why when I discuss the lyrics.
The song was done by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz, names we are all familiar with by now. They did a phenomenal job with this song, and the entire soundtrack. This is one of the best openings for a movie that I have seen in Disney. It gives alot of clear exposition, while also giving us questions to ask and things to think about. The Lyrics are really powerful, as well as the dialogue and the instrumentals.
The incorporation of catholic prayers in latin, and very grand opera voices never seizes to amaze me. Now that I'm older, I actually recognize many of these prayers as well as their meanings and when they are used....they really tied in the prayers really well with the story and plot points.
And the instrumentals...Just wow. They have a really great way of expressing the emotions and severity of many scenes and situations, same with the voices. Like when Quasimodo's mother runs. All of it, a masterpiece.
So to actually do this properly, I recently rewatched the Hunchback. It was amazing, and so much beter than I remembered. If you haven't watched it, I highly recommend it.
Lyrics
Priest Chanting: Olim
Olim deus accelere
Hoc saeculum splendidum
Accelere fiat venire olim
Clopin: Morning in Paris, the city awakes
To the bells of Notre Dame
The fisherman fishes, the baker man bakes
To the bells of Notre Dame
To the big bells as loud as the thunder
To the little bells soft as a psalm
And some say the soul of the city's
The toll of the bells
The bells of Notre Dame
Listen, they're beautiful, no?
So many colors of sound, so many changing moods
Because you know, they don't ring all by themselves
Puppet: - They don't? -
No, you silly boy.
Up there, high, high in the dark bell tower
Lives the mysterious bell ringer.
Who is this creature - Who? -
What is he? - What? -
How did he come to be there - How? -
Hush, Clopin will tell you
Clopin: It is a tale, a tale of a man and a monster.
Dark was the night when our tale was begun
On the docks near Notre Dame
Man 1: Shut it up, will you!
Man 2: We'll be spotted!
Quasimodo's Mother: Hush, little one.
Four frightened gypsies slid silently under
The docks near Notre Dame
Man 1: Four guilders for safe passage into Paris
Clopin: But a trap had been laid for the gypsies
And they gazed up in fear and alarm
At a figure whose clutches
Were iron as much as the bells
Man 2: Judge Claude Frollo
The bells of Notre Dame
Kyrie Eleison (Lord have mercy)
Clopin: Judge Claude Frollo longed
To purge the world
Of vice and sin
Kyrie Eleison (Lord have mercy)
And he saw corruption
Ev'rywhere
Except within
Frollo: Bring these gypsy vermin to the palace of justice
You there, what are you hiding?
Stolen goods, no doubt. Take them from her
Clopin: She ran
Dies Irae, dies illa (Day of wrath, that day)
Solvet saeclum in favilla (Shall consume the world in ashes)
Teste David cum sibylla (As prophesied by David and the sibyl)
Quantus tremor est futurus (What trembling is to be)
Quando Judex est venturus (When the Judge is come)
Quasimodo's Mother: Sanctuary, please give us sanctuary
Frollo: A baby? A monster!
Archdeacon: Stop!
Clopin: Cried the Archdeacon
Frollo: This is an unholy demon.
I'm sending it back to hell, where it belongs.
Archdeacon: See there the innocent blood you have spilled
On the steps of Notre Dame
Frollo: I am guiltless. She ran, I pursued.
Archdeacon: Now you would add this child's blood to your guilt
On the steps of Notre Dame
Frollo: My conscience is clear
Archdeacon: You can lie to yourself and your minions
You can claim that you haven't a qualm
But you never can run from
Nor hide what you've done from the eyes
The very eyes of Notre Dame
Kyrie Eleison (Lord have mercy)
Clopin: And for one time in his life
Of power and control
Kyrie Eleison (Lord have mercy)
Frollo felt a twinge of fear
For his immortal soul
Frollo: What must I do?
Archdeacon: Care for the child, and raise it as your own
Frollo: What? I'm to be saddled with this misshapen...?
Very well. Let him live with you, in your church.
Archdeacon: Live here? Where?
Anywhere
Frollo: Just so he's kept locked away
Where no one else can see
The bell tower, perhaps
And who knows, our Lord works in mysterious ways
Even this foul creature may
Yet prove one day to be
Of use to me
Clopin: And Frollo gave the child a cruel name
A name that means half-formed, Quasimodo
Now here is a riddle to guess if you can
Sing the bells of Notre Dame
Who is the monster and who is the man?
Sing the bells, bells, bells, bells
Bells, bells, bells, bells
Bells of Notre Dame
That is all. What did ya'll think of the Bells of Notre Dame? Please say in the comments.
Thanks.

2020.09.13 21:04 shodanepps Football teams

This show pays great attention to details so I believe the teams that are playing are real clubs, just coded. When football comes on (Moran), has anyone figured out which clubs were playing? Obviously Arsenal, then they tell us Manchester United. I got PRU, it was a play on Prussia and the team was yellow and black. I figured that it must be Borussia Dortmund. Turns out that Borussia is the Latin phrase for Prussia. The first one I have yet to sort out are WTG (s1:e12) wearing red and white. Probably a PL match because of the time difference between the murders. The second one is PRU (yellow) vs ACU (blue) (s1:e21)
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

2020.09.13 17:37 takenschmaken A spoiler-free review of The Folding Knife by K.J. Parker

The Folding Knife is the second K.J. Parker novel I've read after Sixteen Ways to Defend a Walled City. The Folding Knife was published in 2010, and like Sixteen Ways, it's a historical fantasy set in a secondary world devoid of magic.
This novel is written in the third-person and almost entirely from the point of view of Basso, a cunning banker who quickly claws his way to the top of the government. As First Citizen, he reshapes the financial and political institutions of the Vesani Republic to suit his needs. The Folding Knife is a study in hubris, and the opening chapter depicts a disgraced Basso in the present; it is the road to this inevitable fall that takes up the rest of the story. Personal and political conflicts are closely intertwined, suffused with tragic moments that tug at the heartstrings.
The setting appears heavily based on the Byzantine Empire, and the names of characters and places successfully tread the fine line between historically plausible and clearly fictional. The customs and beliefs of the Vesani, along with the various tribal factions, feel authentic and natural.
While I loved Sixteen Ways, I struggled to get through The Folding Knife. It's longer, yes, but I also found large swathes of it bloated and plodding. The prose is bare and uninspiring. Very little is left to the reader's imagination, and every nuance and detail is indiscriminately spelled out on the pages, usually in the form of melodramatic dialogue. Attempts at witty comebacks fail to stick more often than they land. Aside from the highest parentheses-per-paragraph count I've seen, there are some rather abrupt POV shifts within scenes, which make for a jarring reading experience.
I enjoyed the technical (but dumbed down for readers like me) talk of economics, warfare, and numismatics in Sixteen Ways, and this book delivers even more of it. The bits about epidemiology were a nice touch in particular, though they strained my suspension of disbelief considering the time period. That said, I really like this aspect of Parker's style, and I hope to continue seeing it in his other books.
As far as characters go, Basso is sufficiently fleshed out to have captured my interest. He's much less likeable than Orhan, but is nonetheless an interesting character to follow. I can't say the same for the other characters, who are mostly bland cut-outs or bureaucratic drones with a Latin name attached to them.
The Folding Knife is not a bad book, but it did not match the hype at all, and it's not exactly a short read. There are flashes of brilliance, but I found it much less polished than Sixteen Ways to Defend a Walled City. I'd strongly recommend those interested in K.J. Parker to try the latter instead.

2020.09.12 17:53 StevenStevens43 The Messenian trojan horse wars

The Messenian trojan horse wars
Eochu Uairches 633-621 BC:
Eochu Uairches was an Irish high king, that is reported to have left Ireland for 12 years, during the second halve of the 600's BC.
Apparently he left Ireland in a fleet, to wage war and plunder neighbouring countries.
Now this might appear to just be trivial and unimportant legend, but, in actual fact, just this little snippet of information may be more indicative and consistan with the happenings going on in the world around this time.
And this is what i hope to highlight in this article.
Eochu Uairches
Eochu (or Eochaid) Uairches, son of Lugaid Íardonn, was, according to medieval Irish legend and historical tradition, a High King of Ireland. After Lugaid was overthrown and killed by Sírlám, Eochu was driven into exile overseas, but he returned after twelve years, killed Sírlám with an arrow, and took the throne. His epithet is obscure: the Lebor Gabála Érenn says he gained it because of his exile,[1] while Geoffrey Keating explains it as meaning "bare canoes", because he had canoes for a fleet, in which he and his followers used to plunder neighbouring countries.[2]

Kaska invasion:
Now, it is likely that were Eochu Uairches went, is connected to a war which began in around 1450 BC with the kaska invasion.
As has already been established on other threads, the Egyptian pharoah Ahmose I, in 1549 BC, led a native Egyptian uprising against foreign rulers in Egypt, and expelled them from Egypt, and continued chasing them northwards, under Thutmose III.
In response to this, the Indo-Aryan Hittite empire came up from South Asia, and down from Northern parts of europe, and made Anatolia the base for their war on Egypt, when, for whatever reason, the Greeks seemingly allied themselves with Egypt, and began attacking the Hittite empire.
The first attack was the Kaska invasion.
The Kaska invasion was conducted by indigenous Greeks/Romans, as Anatolia was the land that is modern day Turkey, and the Greeks would have felt that this land belonged to them.
Early history
The Kaska, probably originating from the eastern shore of the Propontis,[4] may have displaced the speakers of the Palaic language from their home in Pala).[citation needed]
The Kaska first appear in the Hittite prayer inscriptions that date from the reign of Hantili II, c. 1450 BC, and make references to their movement into the ruins of the holy city of Nerik.[5] During the reign of Hantili's son, Tudhaliya II (c. 1430 BC), "Tudhaliya's 3rd campaign was against the Kaskas."[6] His successor Arnuwanda I composed a prayer for the gods to return Nerik to the empire; he also mentioned Kammama and Zalpuwa as cities which he claimed had been Hittite but which were now under the Kaskas.

Hittite counter attack:
Now, as has already been established, the Hittites hit back, and won the war.
But, in fact, the war would continue from this moment on, probably right up until the time of the Roman empire, if not beyond.
Early history
Tudhaliya III and Suppiluliuma (c. 1375–1350 BC) set up their court in Samuha and invaded Azzi-Hayasa from there. The Kaska intervened, but Suppiluliuma defeated them; after Suppiluliuma had fully pacified the region, Tudhaliya and Suppiluliuma were able to move on Hayasa and defeat it too, despite some devastating guerrilla tactics at their rear. Some twelve tribes of Kaska then united under Piyapili, but Piyapili was no match for Suppiluliuma. Eventually, Tudhaliya and Suppiluliuma returned Hattusa to the Hittites. But the Kaska continued to be a menace both inside and out and a constant military threat. They are said to have fielded as many as 9,000 warriors and 800 chariots.[10]
Arzawa revolt:
The Kaska war would be continued with the Arzawa revolt, when this time, subjugated native Greeks/Romans would rise up against the Hittites.
Involvement in Asia minor
In c. 1400 BC, Hittite records mention the military activities of an Ahhiyawan warlord, Attarsiya, a possible Hittite way of writing the Greek name Atreus, who attacked Hittite vassals in western Anatolia.[53] Later, in c. 1315 BC, an anti-Hittite rebellion headed by Arzawa, a Hittite vassal state, received support from Ahhiyawa.[54] Meanwhile, Ahhiyawa appears to be in control of a number of islands in the Aegean, an impression also supported by archaeological evidence.[55]

Mycenaean collapse:
However, the end result of the Arzawa revolt was not good for the native Greeks/Romans, that found themselves having to flee their homeland and seek refuge on the islands of the Mede, as the Northerners they had tried to remove from Anatolia, had responded with an almost total conquest of Greek mainland.
Final collapse
None of the defence measures appear to have prevented the final destruction and collapse of the Mycenaean states. A second destruction struck Mycenae in c. 1190 BC or shortly thereafter. This event marked the end of Mycenae as a major power. The site was then reoccupied, but on a smaller scale.[62] The palace of Pylos, in the southwestern Peloponnese, was destroyed in c. 1180 BC.[68][69] The Linear B archives found there, preserved by the heat of the fire that destroyed the palace, mention hasty defence preparations due to an imminent attack without giving any detail about the attacking force.[64]
As a result of this turmoil, specific regions in mainland Greece witnessed a dramatic population decrease, especially Boeotia, Argolis and Messenia.[64] Mycenaean refugees migrated to Cyprus and the Levantine coast.[69] Nevertheless, other regions on the edge of the Mycenaean world prospered, such as the Ionian islands, the northwestern Peloponnese, parts of Attica and a number of Aegean islands.[64] The acropolis of Athens, oddly, appears to have avoided destruction.[64]

Fall of Hittite empire:
The Hittites would eventually be removed from Mesopotamia.
But not by the Greeks.
It would be the Neo-Assyrians that would send the Hittites out of Mesopotamia.
Hittites
Between the 15th and 13th centuries BC, the Empire of Hattusa, conventionally called the Hittite Empire, came into conflict with the New Kingdom of Egypt, the Middle Assyrian Empire and the empire of the Mitanni for control of the Near East. The Middle Assyrian Empire eventually emerged as the dominant power and annexed much of the Hittite Empire, while the remainder was sacked by Phrygian newcomers to the region. After c. 1180 BC, during the Late Bronze Age collapse, the Hittites splintered into several independent Syro-Hittite states, some of which survived until the eighth century BC before succumbing to the Neo-Assyrian Empire.

Scoloti:
However the Hittites would only retreat to the otherside of the Black sea, were they would become known as the Scoloti, and would join forces with the Cimmerians.
Scythians
The Scythians are generally believed to have been of Iranian origin.[6] They spoke a language of the Scythian branch of the Iranian languages,[7] and practiced a variant of ancient Iranian religion.[8] Among the earliest peoples to master mounted warfare,[9] the Scythians replaced the Cimmerians as the dominant power on the Pontic Steppe in the 8th century BC.[10] During this time they and related peoples came to dominate the entire Eurasian Steppe from the Carpathian Mountains in the west to Ordos Plateau in the east,[11][12] creating what has been called the first Central Asian nomadic empire.[10][13] Based in what is modern-day Ukraine and southern Russia, the Scythians called themselves Scoloti and were led by a nomadic warrior aristocracy known as the Royal Scythians.

War of the Medes:
The fallen Hittites would now retreat to the otherside of the Black sea, and turn their focus purely on conquering Greece.
Scythians
In the 7th century BC, the Scythians crossed the Caucasus and frequently raided the Middle East along with the Cimmerians, playing an important role in the political developments of the region.[10][14] Around 650–630 BC, Scythians briefly dominated the Medes of the western Iranian Plateau,[15][16]

Welshmen:
Contemporary scholars now agree, that the Scolotis partners in crime, the "Cimmerian", is from the root word Cymru, which is the ancient name for Wales.
legacy
Early modern historians asserted Cimmerian descent for the Celts or the Germans, arguing from the similarity of Cimmerii to Cimbri or Cymry. The etymology of Cymro "Welshman" (plural: Cymry), connected to the Cimmerians by 17th-century Celticists, is now accepted by Celtic linguists as being derived from a Brythonic word *kom-brogos, meaning "compatriot".[21

First Messenian war:
This of course, would all lead to the first Messenian war, when Sparta would expel native Greeks and native Spartans.
First Messenian war
The First Messenian War was a war between Messenia and Sparta. It began in 743 BC and ended in 724 BC, according to the dates given by Pausanias).
The war continued the rivalry between the Achaeans) and the Dorians that had been initiated by the purported Return of the Heracleidae. Both sides utilized an explosive incident to settle the rivalry by full-scale war. The war was prolonged into 20 years. The result was a Spartan victory. Messenia was depopulated by emigration of the Achaeans to other states. Those who did not emigrate were reduced socially to helots, or serfs. Their descendants were held in hereditary subjection for centuries until the Spartan state finally needed them for defense.

Dorians:
Now this is where confusion sets in.
The Trojan horse effect.
You see, the Dorians that invaded Sparta from the North, pushed the indigenous Spartans out to the Medesm and the Dorians assumed the name "Spartans", in the place of the original Spartans.
This means, that because we now have Spartans fighting Medians, people think that the Spartans are the Greeks, and the Medians are the foreigners.
But this is not the case.
The Spartans are actually the Dorians.
The Dorians carried the flag that had originally belonged to the very people they were expelling from Greece.
Dark ages
The earliest certain evidence of human settlement in the region of Sparta consists of pottery dating from the Middle Neolithic period, found in the vicinity of Kouphovouno some two kilometres (1.2 miles) south-southwest of Sparta.[28] These are the earliest traces of the original Mycenaean Spartan civilisation represented in Homer's Iliad.[citation needed]
This civilization seems to have fallen into decline by the late Bronze Age, when, according to Herodotus, Macedonian tribes from the north (called Dorians by those they conquered) marched into the Peloponnese and, subjugating the local tribes, settled there.[27] The Dorians seem to have set about expanding the frontiers of Spartan territory almost before they had established their own state.[29]

Second Messenian war:
One of the biggest mistakes the Spartans made, was expelling the Messenians from their homeland.
I will reveal why shortly.
However the second Messenian war has a great deal to do with why.
You see, the Romans had until now, been completely demolished by the Dorians/Scythians/Hittites/Spartans, whatever you want to call them, but in around 660 BC they re-emerged on Greek mainland and began to fight back.
They actually won a battle, and began pushing the "Spartans" out, but the Spartans did regain their composure and won the war.
At least, for now.
War
Furthermore, the Spartans were able to quell the revolts following the death of the Argive commander. With the aid and support of the Athenian schoolmaster and poet Tyrtaeus, the Spartan Army was able to crush the Messenians and re-establish their helot status. As a result of this war, Spartan society became a strong militaristic power in the Mediterranean in order to control the masses along the Peloponnese and to prevent further rebellions brought on by the helots who later did manage to break away from Spartan rule around 350 BC.[6]
Bakenranef:
Now, do you remember i said that one of the biggest mistakes the Dorians made was expelling the Romans to the Medes?
Well here is why.
The Romans would re-emerge in Italy, according to Egyptian pharoah Bakenranef in 725 BC.
The Romans first arrived in the Bay of Naples.
Bakenranef
,[4] "Perhaps some Greeks, unknown to us, had had close dealings with him; from his reign we have scarab-seals bearing his Egyptian name, one of which found its way into a contemporary Greek grave on Ischia up near the Bay of Naples." Ischia was the earliest of eighth-century BC Greek colonies in Italy.
Link for photo
Bakenranef stele
Ischia:
And archaeologists do agree, that right around this time, Messenaean Greeks turned up in Ischia.
Ancient times
An acropolis site of the Monte Vico area was inhabited from the Bronze Age, as Mycenaean and Iron Age pottery findings attest. Euboean Greeks from Eretria and Chalcis arrived in the 8th century BC to establish an emporium for trade with the Etruscans of the mainland.

Latin league:
Now, the Romans are pushing themselves ever so close to the territory of the Latin league.
Latin league
The Latin League (c. 7th century BC – 338 BC)[1] was an ancient confederation of about 30 villages and tribes in the region of Latium near the ancient city of Rome, organized for mutual defense. The term "Latin League" is one coined by modern historians with no precise Latin equivalent.[2]
Link for photo
Cities of the Latin league
Roman republic:
Now the Romans would eventually invade the territory of the Latin league, and create the Roman republic.
And the Romans were not Latins.
As we have already established on other threads, Latin is a language the Greeks got from Dorians.
Dorians, would of course, be part of the Latin league, which has it's capital and Alba Longa, 12 miles outside Rome.
Roman leadership of Latin league
During the reign of Tarquinius Superbus, the Latins were persuaded to acknowledge the leadership of Rome.
Latin league Etrusans, no:
And no, the Etruscans had nothing to do with the Latin league.
The Etruscans allied themselves with the Romans against the Latins, and the Latin league was an enemy of the Etruscans.
Latin league creation
It was originally created for protection against enemies from surrounding areas (the Etruscans) under the leadership of the city of Alba Longa.[1]
Roman republic:
The Greco-Romans were successful in overthrowing the Roman kingdom of the Latin league, and the created the Roman republic, which later evolved in to the Roman empire.
Roman republic
The Roman Republic (Latin: Rēs pūblica Rōmāna [ˈreːs ˈpuːblɪka roːˈmaːna]) was the era of classical Roman civilization, led by the Roman people, beginning with the overthrow of the Roman Kingdom, traditionally dated to 509 BC, and ending in 27 BC with the establishment of the Roman Empire. It was during this period that Rome's control expanded from the city's immediate surroundings to hegemony over the entire Mediterranean world.

Early Roman expansion
Marseille:
However it was not only Rome the expelled Mycenaeans would turn up.
But also the South coast of France.
History of France
In 600 BC, Ionian Greeks from Phocaea founded the colony of Massalia (present-day Marseille) on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea,
Link for photo
Massalia coins in Gaul
Gaul:
Now, Gaul was a Celtic colony.
It covered most of France and Northern Italy before the Greco-Roman invasion, and expanded to include other parts too, including Greece.
But this period, marked the beginning of a Celtic depopulation from mainland europe.
Gaul
Covering large parts of modern-day France, Belgium, northwest Germany and northern Italy, Gaul was inhabited by many Celtic and Belgae tribes whom the Romans referred to as Gauls and who spoke the Gaulish language roughly between the Oise) and the Garonne (Gallia Celtica), according to Julius Caesar.
Link for photo
End of Celtic expansion
Summary:
Now as we have already established on other threads, the Gaulish language was Gaelic, and Irish people were Gaelic speakers.
Therefore, the Irish high kings likely had a lot of interests in Italy and France.
So if we suddenly had Irish high kings taking off in a fleet of boats around this period, to wage war and plunder, then it would be likely they were going to war with the Greco-Romans in Italy and France.

(From 1253 to 1103) Leafy: That's great, Liy. Now we're behind The One Alliance by a single point! Liy: Don't worry, Remote and Pin can take care of that! Remote: Yeah! Pin: I agree! Announcer: It's not your turn to reduce points but sure (From 1104 to 954) Lollipop: Oh no! I have to remove their points too! Match, are you with me? Match: Like, sure! QUESTION (Various 5)
In the interview from the precedent question (on Billboard and released on 4/1/2016), Su-metal said:
"[a song] has not only Babymetal vibes, but also has Japanese elements. Our song "Megitsune" is popular among international fans, and I have a feeling that [this song] will be something close to "Megitsune".
Do you know, or can you guess, which song she was talking about?

QUESTION (Various 6)
This quizz will speak about the magazine Kerrang!
So here is the first question: Babymetal first appearance in a western magazine dedicated to metal was in the 1509th edition of Kerrang. Do you know when it happened?

The precedent question gave you a year. You could know that this edition was published on March the 22. Here are three Babymetal important events.

So here is the question: How many of these events could you link with this appearance in Kerrang?

QUESTION (Various 7)
FROM THE SHORTEST TO THE LONGEST SONG, can you find the good order?

Do you remember how many of these songs last more than 6 minutes?

QUESTION (Various 8)
"BAW"?

let's speak about the famous Babymetal BAW booklets. First question: How many booklets did they release?

One of them was named "Legend of the Trinity", and featured pictures from different sources. Amongst the following shows, which one is NOT featured in this booklet?

Ok next question: What was the name of the last booklet they released?

Last question: let's now speak about the Babymetal Apocrypha comic book. I won't speak about what's inside... You certainly know that "Apocrypha" comes from the term "Apocryphus" right? But do you know from which language this word Apocryphus comes?

QUESTION (Various 9)
Let's have a Moimoi quiz! So it is in two parts! You all know that Yui and Moa wore one glove each. Do you know the side?
However, it has not always been like that. At their beginning they alternated, but since one show, they religiously wore the same glove. Do you know what is this show?

QUESTION (Various 10)

Big thanks to kripkrip for the quizz idea!
In Logirl #6, the girls are playing a quizz with Mori-sensei. The game is about foreign languages: they have to guess the meaning of a foreign expression (like "pronto-pronto" in italian). One of the expression was "Moimoi", which became the famous way to name both Yui and Moa. But: did you know what is the language it originated from?

Ok, now you have the language, but do you have the meaning?

QUESTION (Various 11)
There is a special interview, about 25 minutes long, called "History of Babymetal". You surely know that, right? This interview is included in a special edition of a DVD, which was only sold at a particular event. Do you know which event?

By the way, in this interview, Su & Moa mentioned that during their very first live, the audience has a particular reaction during "Doki Doki Morning". Do you know what reaction?

QUESTION (Various 12)
There is a kind of tradition the band members have between them: They do funny faces. So, let's start! First question: How, in the Babymetal fandom, do we call these special moments?

Ok that was easy! Let's move to the next question: There is one song in particular where Su and Moa have been caught playing "faces" several times. Which one?

It was easy too. Now let's make the thing more difficult. Su is not the only victim of Moa's funny faces... She and a Kami member did some Hengao battle during Road of Resistance. Do you know who is this Kami?

These games of "faces" are well known since at least 2015. However we know for sure that Moa (not surprisingly...) has already been caught on a cam making "faces" during a Sakura Gakuin live show. So here is the killer question: Do you know who was her "victim"?

QUESTION (Various 13)
Let's have a look to this very very famous gif... So where that happened?

Easy? Ok let's see if you can answer this one: there is a documentary about this event, here it is, you can watch it entirely if you want, it won't affect the question... Good? So, do you know where this video originally aired?

QUESTION (Various 14)
First of all, let's have a look to this picture.
Good? A well known image right? So this picture was taken in the context of the making of commercial videos.
Here is the first question: do you know how are these promotional videos named?

Not easy. Hang on, it's not over yet!
Second question: do you know what does the good answer in the precedent question mean?

Ok that was a bit difficult. Let's have a last easy question. During the making of these commercials, the girls are given an accessoire. Do you know which one?

QUESTION (Various 15)

Do you know what happened during the Kerrang! awards ceremony in 2016, where Babymetal was granted an award?

QUESTION (Various 16)

First of all, have a look to this very short video
You're good? Yeah? Let's go then!
Ok first question: Where does it come from?

That was difficult, wasn't it? Let's move to the second question: In this short sequence the girls are obviously shocked by something they read in a book. Do you know the name of this book?

QUESTION (Various 17)
In this picture from a babymetal sequence, you can see a little twist on a famous French painting by Eugène Delacroix. So... What is the name of the original painting?

By the way, do you know what event is depicted in this painting?

Let's go back to Babymetal! Have a look to this picture showing some members of the Kami band at this Kamishibai May Revolution Death Match tour.
Ok, there is Boh. Easy. But the other one is...

And her Kami name is...

QUESTION (various 18)
In order to make this quiz I used some infos on a thread posted by Kmudametal. So big thanks to him and to all the kitsune who participated then (DanFZ & Jabberwokk in particular).
First of all, have a look to this picture

Cool picture right? So here is the first question: Where and when?

That was NOT easy. Second question: Why the brooms?

Final question. Throwing fake money in the air happened several times, always during Onedari Daisakusen (for obvious reasons). However, do you know where it happened first?

QUESTION (various19)
So... the girls have been seen several times with a white plushy named Shiro-tan. Matter of fact this plushy belongs to Moa, but Yui has one of her own, that she also brought overseas during Babymetal tours. Do you know what kind of plushy it is?

And do you know its name?

It wasn't easy right? However the following question will be even tougher! This little plushy is said by the girls themselves to make a sound... Do you know which one?

QUESTION (various20)
You have all watched Babymetal songs on YouTube, certainly several times, or even countless times for some of you... but did you really paid attention to the entire title? The following are partial titles in Japanese that you usually found in the song title:
A) モーニング
B) ミッドナイト
C) ギミチョコ
D) ゼッタイ

Can you match them with the song they come from?
1) Uki Uki Midnight
2) Gimme chocolate
3) Ijime, Dame, Zettai
4) Doki Doki Morning

So, amongst the combinations below, which one is good?

Oooh Looks like you've made it to the end! Bravo! Here are some goodies for your enjoyment!

2020.09.12 07:52 CrystalPlayStation TTYD in Spanish

Since I recently played through the game in Spanish, I thought I'd record some of the differences/similarities between the Spanish and English translations. I'm pretty certain that both versions were translated from the original Japanese, so the Spanish isn't just a later copy of the English version; they're just adapted differently from the source. No matter how I played it, I enjoyed going through this game twice. If I missed something you want to know, specific or otherwise, I can answer it.

2020.09.12 07:32 Bones12x2 LMG Day 1 - The abstinence was worth it! (detailed review)

I just finished watching Day 1 of LMG in the dark on my big 4k Sony TV with some nice studio Bluetooth headphones... and in short....outstanding!
(warning...this is a long post...like a novel...but I had to put my thoughts down. I tried to make it fun to read, so hopefully, someone actually bothers...not that my opinion really matters)
As the title implies, I bent over backwards to avoid even the tiniest bit of any LMG footage between the BluRay announcement and now. The last BM show I saw was The Forum and so I knew that LMG was going to be quite a different show with a ton of new content. I wanted my first watch of it to be one complete and totally fresh experience...and I am so glad I did. It did not disappoint and I think my avoidance really helped make it feel special.
I have a ton of thoughts about it overall...but the one that stands out the most is how well this show really encapsulates the entire Metal Galaxy journey...both purely as an entertainment entity and as a representation of my perspective and consumption of this portion of BM's existence.
Ultimately everything I love about the current BM and MG was done exceptionally well and met every expectation while the things I've been critical of...pretty much all still are what they are...but they certainly did nothing to make anything worse or irredeemable.
**The Stage:**I was conflicted on the stage even before watching the video. I'm on record as stating that BM is at their best with theatrical stages that use practical and tangible props and presentation. I.E. Yokohama with the giant Fox heads, Budokan essentially performing on a pentagram on their way to kawaii hell, and Legend S in all its dark brooding atmosphere etc.
So a stage that essentially is just a gigantic TV screen the size of a parking lot with practically zero "props" or figures is normally less interesting to me. And to be honest, at first, I didn't love it. It seemed overbearing. It was so massive and so bright that it seemed to drown the band and girls in light....buuuut.....I think part of that was just a matter of getting used to it. Also, I will say that stylistically with the Galaxy theme having a kind of sci-fi vibe plus most of Disc 1 on the album being far more pop focused....as much as I love the Iron Maiden Esque metal stage design of old...the highly digital lazer filled spectacle of that gigantic HD screen does fit the mood quite well.
One thing that I never did quite adjust too is the sheer size of the platforms. There was soooo much empty space. So the camera was either really tight on the girls to make sure you could actually see them or it was super wide to show the massive screen in all its glory...which just lost the band in many cases. But there is no real solution to that if you want that amount of real estate, plus, making room for the finale was clearly part of the design.
Overall, that type of stage is not something I want to see permanent but it gets a thumbs up in this case.
**The Setlist:**I don't even need to say much....it was almost perfect for a concert designed to center around MG. I still miss the hell out of BMD but that wouldn't have made sense here.
I do think it was a bit short...for whatever reason, BM is just committed to these short shows. I don't understand it. Old as hell bands like Metallica and Dream Theater play non-stop for like two and a half hours. I see no reason why BM can't play for around 2 hours in these more special one time type shows.
Also, I didn't think I'd miss BBAB that much since I like but don't love the song...but I actually did miss it quite a bit. Especially considering how fast the concert seemed to go by. I really think having that song left off was one of the few objectively disappointing parts.
**The Crowd:**I only mention this topic because of how important they are to a great BM show. I'll never forget watching the crowd in MetRock for the first time and how impressed I was with their presence. I don't know if this one was on that level, but they did their thing.
Plus, this is more of an observation than criticism...but I was a little sad to see that the way the runout part of the stage kinda jutted at an angle did mess with the mosh'sh pits a bit. Especially in RoR. I seriously think that if there was no stage extension in the middle so that the crowd could be one big ocean of people....I think they might have set the record for the biggest circle pit ever. I could totally see the entire center of the venue becoming one giant circle pit if possible. Oh well.
**Performance:**Again...not much to say....the girls and the band nailed it as usual. Su really shined with the new songs.
One thing that stood out a lot was how well the old stuff still worked even in that setting and with their newish look and style. Gimme Choco still absolutely slays and Megitsune will never get old, and Yava! is just such a damn good track. As much as i wish it wasn't true...imo...the first few tracks from MG just don't hold a candle to those classics no matter the context.
I was also still bummed to see that Moa is still lip-syncing a lot of the concert. I'm having trouble telling when she is and isn't now. She definitely wasn't singing for the first few songs. Megitsune was the first song that I was like...oh that's definitely a live mic. It's weird. Supposedly she has some hearing damage from 2019 but I don't understand why that would only affect some songs and not others...especially since most of what she sings solo on songs like DaDaDance are more rhythmic and less melody-based. It's not something where you are gonna blow a note badly. Plus she's performed a lot of the MG songs dozens of times now, so the dancing or memory is not an excuse. Hopefully thats temporary. Preferably remedied with solo songs.
**Overall Concert Review:**As hinted at in the beginning....for me...MG is a case of highs and lows while older BM was almost exclusively highs. But the bright side is that the highs have been as high as ever and in the case of LMG Day 1...the stuff that worked was superb. In fact, I'd say that pretty much everything from Oh Majinai on was one constant super high.
I'm just gonna kinda breeze through the first part of the show.I still don't really care much for Future Metal, its at least cool with the Ghost in the Shell x Magical Girl transformation video, I like that...but otherwise...ehhh.... I don't hate it but a BMD 2.0 would be 9 trillion times better. Then DDD...it's fun, I like it...but it's like a less fun Iine. Then EG, at least it was the half-Japanese version...but EG is one of if not my least favorite BM song.
At this point...I was actually feeling kinda nervous. I was so looking forward to watching this concert and up to this point...it was just a bigger version of The Forum and none of those first few songs really get me going and I was still kinda taken back by the screen dominating the ...uh...screen. So I was like....man....please don't disappoint me. But I did remind myself that I did really enjoy The Forum, so I wasn't super worried yet.
Then....Shanti starts....this song for me is like a tasty appetizer. It's not the main course and It's not what I'm there for but it kind gets the part started. Some people freakin love this song. I don't really get that, It's good but not that good...at least to me. Then again...some people would rather have appetizers at a nice restaurant than a 5-star steak...so whatev. Shanti isn't a song I get excited about beforehand or think about much after...but it does it's job well. It really started to pick me up and get me ready for the epicness of the rest of the concert. It was also the first time I appreciated the benefit of the mega screen...and how can you not like the choreo in that song.
........speaking of which.....OH! Ma-Ji-Fuckin-AI.....LOL...I fucking love this song. It's so silly and dumb in all the best ways. It's not even a good song...it's just good....at somethin....I don't even know...haha
I still perfectly remember hearing this song for the very first time when the album was released. I had the biggest dumb grin on my face the entire time and I instantly had the exact vision of what it would be like at a big Japanese arena show....this is one of the songs that I avoided spoiling like the black death since there were tons of fan cams during the tour....I had a very specific mental image of what the performance would be like on a big stage and how the crowd would react and I didn't want that image to be tainted until I saw it in proper HD....and they nailed it....Im even chuckling right now. The song is still stupid but it's just so damn fun. AND I LOVE THE DANCING...OMG ....its so adorable....and for those that say that the "older" BM can't be kawaii anymore...so wrong, that was cute AF. Mikiko murdered that choreo with sugar. I will say though...man, we need a mint-flavored time machine...i can't imagine how adorable that song would be with 15 year old Moi Moi doing it...I'd get diabeetus watching it.
I could go on about Yava! but y'all already know that song is hot lava.
BNDayum....that was incredible. That song has been my second favorite on Disc1 of the album since Day 1, second only to NNB... but for LMG Day 1...it stole the show. At least as far as MG specific songs go...
I had caught some whispers about how good it was at this show recently but I was a bit nervous, cuz I had high expectations, and since I already like the song a lot. I wasn't sure it would do much aside from just meet the expectations...but it smoked em dry. Im not even sure what to say, it was perfect. Su and the kami's kilt it of course but the overall production absolutely blasted a grand slam. The design of the video back drop and the silhouettes of the girls and the choreo were so so good. I literally said "wow" to myself when it finished. It was at this point in the concert where the gigantic screen really showed its worth and created an experience that made me realize there was no better option for a stage design for this specific concert.
Also, even though I am a hardcore believer in the OG BM kawaii/brutal hybrid. BND in this venue with that performance was truly something that only this version of BM could pull off. I still don't want future BM to go too far in that direction overall but it's impossible to not appreciate that element of their evolution....just as long as they throw some more death metal and thrash brutality in the next album :)
I'll basically skip over Gimme Choco and Megitsune....I'll just say that they are still as wonderful as they have ever been. They haven't aged a bit imo and still bring a level of intensity that unfortunately I don't think anything in MG matches. Also, those songs were the only moments in the concert that made me miss Yui...that's the only thing that could have made them better.
NNB...honestly, I kinda need to go back and watch this one again. I was still so impressed with BND and then jamming out to the classics that I kinda don't remember it that well. I know I enjoyed it, it's my favorite song on Disc 1, but I was kinda in a daze when I watched it this time. I do remember the use of fire for the first time in the concert, that was a nice touch. I think it's one of those songs that is just really solid all around but didn't really do anything that surprising in the concert, so I just enjoyed it and moved on. I do remember the dancing being really good. I like that Mikiko didn't go overboard with the latin style. It's there but still also very japanese as well. .....Mikiko needs a raise, every single new song had perfect choreo. I will say that the one beef I have with the song on the album is still present live...it needs either a badass solo...or some kind of extended instrumental bridge that brings back the super cool beginning riff. It's one of several songs on MG that I genuinely enjoy but wish it just had that something extra. Felt the same in the concert.
I normally woulnd't say too much about The One or RoR since we've all seen/heard them a billion times....but holy hell....this performance of The One was amazing! Along with OM and BND...the big TV in the back was put to outstanding use for this song. My jaw dropped when they cut to the wide shot with all the mist on the stage and that wall to wall layout of the giant galaxy, it looked so epic and fit both the song and the LMG theme perfectly. I've always loved this song and I actually tend to prefer the original version in almost all cases aside from specifically the Legend S performance. So I was glad they let the band come in instantly. Not much else to say...it was just epic.
Lastly....good ole dagum RoR! ...or Mega Road of Resistance in this case.Again, don't need to say much.... 13 people on stage....and 20 thousand something semi-delirious people spinning around in circles and chanting in unison. How can that not be awesome?Also...the outro with the girls doing the "We are..." while the tag team kamis played all the sweep arpeggios and hit all the drums at the same time for 5 minutes straight was pretty freakin hilarious.
God I can't wait til tomorrow to watch them form Voltron for IDZ!
In summary...watching LMG Day 1 was basically the exact same mix of fun and bewildering emotions as listening to Disc 1 for the first time...just on steroids....and sushi...I ate sushi and drank Ramune while I watched.
P.S. - I don't wannt be too positive...so I gotta also add that I'm still super annoyed by the kami disrespect...I miss their solos soooo much and they seriously got like a combined 10 seconds of screen time up until The One. By that I mean, intentional focused kami camera...not just vague shots of them in the back ground...it was like..... half a second of Ohmura...then nothing for a while...then half a second of Leda...and I swear there was like 1 close up of Hideki or Boh the whole damn show. I love the kamis and it pisses me off so much how much they are wasted. Even when playing the solos in DDD and BND they didn't show them.
Rant over...concert was dope. Gonna go watch an episode of K'On (aka BM light) and then go to bed.
